Neige
Serge Lama Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Serge Lama's song "Neige" talks about two people who turn to words to control their violence. They inject silence into their veins, like Rimbaud and Verlaine, to calm their internal turmoil. They cultivate dreams instead of speaking, and this dreaming, they hope, will make the day brighter. The second stanza is a grim premonition of their future. The pair will end up buried in the snow, surrounded by crows and vultures. Lama sings that these two people are not a part of society anymore. They are isolated and do not belong to the same planet as the rest of us.

The third stanza of the song is directed at us, the listeners. We are asked to look at the old people who used to be young and wild in the early 1900s –- the history that we have forgotten. We are to pay attention to the "slow suicide" of the youth who have nothing but their bare hands, the ones who are no longer invited to parties but instead end up in narrow alleys. The final part of the song repeats the earlier line about how these two people will end up in the snow. They will die in the fever of their love, which will not be reciprocated.

Overall, "Neige" is a song about outsiders, misfits who do not fit into mainstream society. The two people mentioned in the song are troubled, isolated, and resort to a form of escapism that ultimately leads to their own end.
