He was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

Ashkenazy began his studies at the age of 6 and showing prodigious talent, was accepted at the Central Music School at 8. A graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, he won second prize in the prestigious International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955 and shared first prize in the 1962 International Tchaikovsky Competition with English pianist John Ogdon. He is celebrated for his intelligent and well thought-out interpretations. He often recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra; two of these recordings were of the Emperor Concerto by Beethoven, and a number of Rachmaninoff pieces (including his Second Concerto).

He has recorded the complete 24 Preludes and Fugues of Shostakovich, and Chopin's entire works for piano.

Midway through his pianistic career, Ashkenazy branched into conducting. His performances of the Sibelius symphonies have been lauded in particular. He was the principal conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1987 to 1994, and in 1998 he became principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until September 1, 2003.

Vladimir Ashkenazy is currently President of the Rachmaninoff Society.

Wonderful, as expected of Ashkenazy. but is the piece a valse or a mazurka? Cf ,the mazurka
in C*min op 63 no 3 which.to me, is even more beautiful.

A valse. Also possible to play it with some melancholy ( Alice Sara Ott or Sokolov ). It is not an early work ( somewhere around 1845 )

I think Sokolov's version is better it has more feelings this one is just rushed

Feels rushed. It's nice to listen to, but there is not much sad emotion in the recording. Even though Ashkenazy's touch is impeccable, I think Sokolov's version is a much better interpretation. It conveyed more feelings of melancholy. Considering this piece was composed in his last few years when Chopin was mostly home-bound and in great physical pain, it can't be too cheery.

Yong Li May I correct you: a lot of little pieces by Chopin like this one, were writen when he was a kid a never published, hence they're posthumous. It doesn't mean he composed them right before he died, it just means it was never published while he was alive :)

Actually this waltz was composed in the last years of his life (between 1843-48). he was mostly in bed due to illness. He wrote a total of 19 waltzes and this is possibly the last one (published), hence Waltz No. 19. There was some brilliant moments in the middle (the A major section), but the theme of this waltz was sadness, and should be played slowly.

@MAgus L i have been playing piano for nearly 2 years now. I have learned this piece within a week. I have mastered it now. The simplicity is what makes this piece so moving and beautiful. It sounds to me like a love tragedy. Or a man trying to find love.
