They gained attention at the beginning of their career with songs such as "Kissing You" and "Baby Baby." However, it was not until 2009, they gained immense popularity with their hit single "Gee", which, until 2012, held the record for being the longest running number one song on KBS Music Bank, having held the number one chart ranking for nine consecutive weeks. "Gee" was named 'song of the decade' by the Korean music site, Melon. The group solidified their place in the Korean music industry with their follow-up singles "Genie", "Run Devil Run," and "Oh!."

Being an eight-member group, they released Catch Me If You Can in March 2015. A unreleased version of the track & music video later surfaced online which still featured Jessica, It is Likely the Song was Made while she was still in the group.
On August 2015, Lion Heart was released, with Party, Lion Heart and You Think being the title tracks. In conjuction with the release of the album, Girls' Generation commenced a new concert tour called Phantasia and became the first South Korean girl group to hold a fourth concert tour. My first love story, oh, yeah
My angel and my girls
My sunshine, uh uh let's go
Gee, gee, gee, gee, baby, baby, baby
Gee, gee, gee, gee, baby, baby, baby
Gee, gee, gee, gee, baby, baby, baby
Gee, gee, gee, gee, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
No, no, no, no, no
Gee, gee, gee, gee, gee
Gee, gee, gee, gee, baby, baby, baby
Gee, gee, gee, gee, baby, baby, baby
Gee, gee, gee, gee, baby, baby, baby
Gee, gee, gee, gee, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
No, no, no, no, no
Gee, gee, gee, gee, gee
No, no, no, no, no (ha)
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh (oh woa oh yeah)
Gee, gee, gee, gee, gee
Oh, 젖은 눈빛 oh, yeah
Oh, 좋은 향기 oh, yeah (oh yeah)

The lyrics of SNSD’s “Gee” are written from the perspective of a girl who is experiencing her first love. The girl describes the feeling of love as being so intense that it leaves her breathless and sometimes unable to sleep at night. She finds herself feeling shy and embarrassed around the person she loves and feels like a foolish young girl in love. The song makes use of playful, repetitive lyrics with numerous instances of “Gee” and “baby” to underscore the sweetness and lightheartedness of first love.
The song’s lyrics also portray the narrator's insecurity and uncertainty about how to express her feelings to the person she loves. The girl wants to tell him how she feels, but she is afraid of being rejected or judged. The repetition of “어떡해야 좋은 걸까” (what should I do?) highlights this uncertainty and hesitation.
