Overall Meaning

The Godspeed You! Black Emperor's “Storm” is a breathtakingly beautiful instrumental, consisting of four parts - “Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, Like Antennas to Heaven...,” “Gathering Storm/Il Pleut à Mourir (+Clatters Like Worry),” “Welcome to Arco AM/PM...' (L.A.X.; 5/14/00),” and “Cancer Towers on Holy Road Hi-Way.” The first part starts with a slowly crescendoing melancholic piano tune until it erupts into an intense, post-rock guitar-fueled climax. The second part begins with a peaceful city sample and gradually builds up to an almost overwhelming wall of sound made up of chaotic drums, cello screeches, and wailing guitars. “Welcome to Arco AM/PM...' (L.A.X.; 5/14/00)” is an intriguing interlude in which an automated message from the titular gas station warns customers about unsolicited approaches from individuals. “Cancer Towers on Holy Road Hi-Way” features an incredibly heavy yet atmospheric sound with droning guitars, intense drums, and a mesmerizing violin outro.

While the song is entirely instrumental, the band evokes many emotions and sets different moods through their music. The first part’s slow and reflective melody highlights a bittersweet feeling, while the second part establishes an impending urge and soundscape of a coming storm. The third part is full of tension and warning, whereas the fourth part feels cathartic as though pushing through pain and destruction to a newfound peace that's not entirely comfortable. The band is incredibly skilled in storytelling, which comes through by how they alternate between oppressive darkness and salvific beauty through their music, offering listeners an excellent space to meditate on a wide range of emotions.

Cancer Towers on Holy Road Hi-Way
This line is instrumental and therefore open to interpretation. However, it could suggest a bleak and desolate landscape, perhaps one with industrial complexes emitting harmful pollutants.
