Heavily influenced by his idol, Elvis Presley, and the 1950s rock revolution, he is also known as the most famous dancer of the Hula hoop fad. For the last 40 years he has retained his popularity in Italy, selling millions of records and appearing in numerous TV shows and movies (including a short appearance in Fellini's La Dolce Vita, before becoming a famous artist). In the latter respect, he has also been a creator of a comic genre, with his characteristic walking and his facial expressions. For the most part, his films were commercially successful, in fact in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, he was the king of the Italian box office in low budget movies. As an actor, critics point to Serafino (1968), directed by Pietro Germi, as his best effort.
As a director he frequently casts Ornella Muti, Eleonora Giorgi and his wife Claudia Mori. His best movie like director is "Yuppi Du", winner of The Golden Palm at Cannes Festival. He and Claudia are the parents of Rosita, Rosalinda and Vincent Celentano, the latter most notable to worldwide audiences for playing the Satan character in Mel Gibson`s The Passion of the Christ. He also works often as a host for several Italian television shows.
His 1968 song "Azzurro" has regained popularity in 2006, due to it being the anthem of the Italian national football team (the Azzurri) who won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The artist Vincent Fiorello has also created a remix of the song.
His last concert-event in 2012, after 18 years without live performances, was transmitted on Canale 5, with over 9 million viewers both evenings.
L'albero di 30 piani
Adriano Celentano Lyrics

Guarda bene come ci ha conciati la metropoli
Quelli come noi ben pochi sai ce n'erano
The lyrics of Adriano Celentano's "L'albero di 30 piani" speak of the life-changing experience of moving from a rural area to a bustling city. The singer talks to an individual who has an obsession with city life, about the harsh reality of life in the urban jungle. He reminisces about how there were only a few people like them who hailed from the countryside and recounts how people used to laugh at them, but they knew that they would soon become like them. The song highlights the struggle for survival in the city where people are as grey as the skyscrapers and have waxen faces, which seems to be the law of the city's atmosphere. The singer talks about how the air tastes poisonous, the factory clouds paint the sky black, and the city's sound is terrible.
The song talks about how the city has consumed their lives, and they long to go back to the simplicity of nature. The singer talks about the old times where he and his companion used to lay naked on trees and bask in the sun while listening to the larks chirping on the branches. Now, the roar of cars replaces the bird songs while the factories poison them with chemicals, leaving them with no escape. The singer feels that the city suffocates him, but his breath keeps going down and doesn't come up. He has a hopeful vision of a ray of light, and he envisions an albero or a tree, rising thirty floors from the ground, perhaps representing the chance of returning to nature someday.

It's your obsession with living in a city
Guarda bene come ci ha conciati la metropoli
Take a good look at how the metropolis has made us
Quelli come noi ben pochi sai ce n'erano
There were very few like us, you know
E dicevano quelli vengono dalla campagna
They used to say 'those come from the countryside'
Ma ridevano si spacciavano già sapevano
But they were laughing, pretending and already knew
That soon we too would become like them
All gray like skyscrapers with wax faces
With wax faces, it's the law of this atmosphere
You can't escape it as long as you live in the city
Naked on the tree, you used to sunbathe with me
And the larks used to sing for us on the branches
Ora invece qui nella città i motori
Now instead, here in the city, the engines
Of the cars are already singing us the funeral march
And the factories perfume even the air for us
Painting the sky black and smelling of death
But the authorities say that the city is modern
You shouldn't mind if the cement even closes your nose
Neurosis is in fashion, whoever hasn't rejected it will be
I can't breathe the air anymore, I feel like I'm suffocating a bit
I feel my breath going down without coming back up
Vedo solo che qualcosa sta nascendo
I only see that something is growing
Maybe it's a tree, a thirty-story tree
