Coimbra
Amália Rodrigues Lyrics

De sonho e tradição
O lente é uma canção
E a lua a faculdade
O livro é uma mulher
Só passa quem souber
E aprende-se a dizer saudade
Ainda és capital
Do amor em Portugal, ainda
Coimbra onde uma vez
Com lágrimas se fez
A história dessa Inês tão linda
Coimbra das canções
Coimbra que nos põe
Os nossos corações, à luz
Coimbra dos doutores
Pra nós os seus cantores
A fonte dos amores és tu
The lyrics to Amália Rodrigues's song Coimbra describe the city of Coimbra, Portugal as a lesson in dream and tradition. The city is personified in different forms, with the university professor being a song and the moon representing the university. The book is described as a woman who requires one to have the proper knowledge in order to pass through her. The word saudade, which is Portuguese for nostalgia or longing, is a common theme throughout the song.
The city of Coimbra is described as the capital of love in Portugal, and the place where the story of Inês, a tragic figure from Portuguese history, took place with tears. Coimbra is also known for its songs, which have the ability to light up the hearts of those who hear them. The city is home to many scholars and is the source of love for the singers who take inspiration from it.

Fascinating. Eddie Fisher, of course, is Carrie Fisher's father. Often heard of him but never heard him sing. Amalia Rodrigues, or simply Amalia as they call her, was absolutely beautiful at this stage. And as far I'm concerned, Amalia is still the greatest fadista and vocalist to ever come out of Portugal. Only Teresa Salgueiro of the band Madredeus is comparable to Amalia when it comes to emoting, although their voices and styles are very different. If you're reading this and you don't know who Teresa Salgueiro is or have not heard of Madredeus, do yourself a big fat favour and seek them out. Discovering Madredeus changed my life. It could change yours. Cheers.
