The lyrics of Amália Rodrigues's song Perseguição (“Persecution” in English) tell the story of a woman who is being relentlessly pursued by a man despite her constant rejection. The woman tells this man that she has nothing to offer him, that she is already married and cannot be his mistress. She describes the man as being rich and elegant, but she values her poor but noble husband who is the love of her life.
In the song, the woman says she has torn up the letters sent by the man without reading them, and refuses to accept any gifts such as jewelry or flowers he brings to her.
