Just Friends
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just friends
Lovers no more
Just friends
But not like before
To think of what we've been
And not to kiss again
Seems like pretending
It isn't the ending
Two friends
Drifting apart
Two friends
But one broken heart
We loved we laughed we cried
Then suddenly love died
The story ends
And we're
Just friends
We loved we laughed and we cried
Then suddenly love died
The story ends

And we're
Just friends

Overall Meaning

In "Just Friends," Billie Holiday sings about a relationship that has transitioned from being lovers to just friends. The song is about two people who have gone through the ups and downs of a romantic relationship and have now found themselves drifting apart. While they still have a connection, it's not the same as before, and they can't go back to being in love. The song is filled with melancholic emotions and paints a picture of two people trying to come to terms with the end of their relationship.

Holiday's vocals in this song perfectly capture the mood of the lyrics. She sings with a rawness that makes the listener feel the pain of the characters in the song. The lines "To think of what we've been and not to kiss again/Seems like pretending it isn't the ending" are particularly powerful in conveying the sense of loss that comes with the end of a relationship.

Overall, "Just Friends" is a poignant and emotional song that captures the complexities of relationships and how they can change over time.

"Billie was at ease"? I love Lady Day but it is well known that she would consume alcohol at her recording sessions in the 50's. Billie's speech is slurred here and she is probably intoxicated. It's misleading or naive or both to say that in these sessions Billie was "at ease".
