Sempre uguali, sempre quelli all'equatore e al Polo Nord
Ma come fanno i marinai
A baciarsi fra di loro
A rimanere veri uomini però
E intorno al mondo senza amore
Come un pacco postale
Senza nessuno che gli chiede come va
Col cuore appresso a una donna
Una donna senza cuore
Chissà se ci pensano ancora, chissà
Ma dove vanno i marinai
Mascalzoni e imprudenti
Come fanno i marinai
Con questa noia che li uccide
Addormentati sopra un ponte
In fondo a malincuore
Da Genova a New York
Ma come fanno i marinai
A fare a meno della gente
E a rimanere veri uomini però
E intorno al mondo senza amore
Come un pacco postale
Senza nessuno che gli chiede come va
Col cuore appresso a una donna
Una donna senza cuore
Chissà se ci pensano ancora, chissà
The lyrics of "Ma come fanno i marinai" by Francesco De Gregori tell the story of sailors and their lives at sea. The song explores the questions of where they go, what they do, and how they navigate through their emotions and challenges. The song starts by asking where the sailors go with their white jackets, always looking for a fight or a bazaar. It then asks what they do when they arrive in the port, suggesting that they seek love in bars and visit widows. The lyrics also wonder how sailors recognize the stars and how they maintain their masculinity while sharing affection with one another.
The song delves into the loneliness and struggles that sailors experience during their journeys. It suggests that they travel the world without love, like a package without anyone inquiring about their well-being. The sailors carry their hearts with them, yearning for a woman, even though she may not reciprocate the same feelings. The song ponders if sailors still think about love, despite the challenges they face.
Overall, "Ma come fanno i marinai" examines the contradictory nature of sailors' lives, oscillating between adventure and danger, seeking love while being surrounded by isolation, and staying true to their masculinity while expressing vulnerability.

They dream of returning
They get over their hangover
Weary of a life full of mosquitoes
They don't care to be in the middle of the sea
A sea that gets more and more dull
As time goes by
On this useless route
