THE EDGE OF NIGHT
text by J.R.R. TOLKIEN, adapted by PHILIPPA BOYENS

Home is behind
The world ahead
And there are many paths to tread

Through shadow
To the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight

Mist and shadow
Cloud and shade
All shall fade

All shall
Fade

Overall Meaning

Howard Shore's The Sacrifice of Faramir, features two parts; The Last Son and The Edge of Night. The Last Son is a Sindarin language chant which means "You must understand, he does the duty of two sons now. For himself, and for the one who will not return." It is sung by the soldiers of Gondor for Faramir who is going out to fight against all odds to save his city. It reflects the deep appreciation the soldiers have for their new leader, who is a brave and inspiring commander that will do whatever it takes to defend his people. The soldiers acknowledged that Faramir has taken over the responsibility of his father's duty as well as that of his older brother, Boromir, who had died in the pursuit of the ring.

The Edge of Night, on the other hand, is a soliloquy indicating the emotional turmoil Aragorn is going through as he awaits the battle to come. He knows that the battle between good and evil is imminent and only one side will win. He is questioning the path he is about to take, and is afraid of the shadows that could consume him. It highlights the challenges and sacrifices required in the fight against evil, and these lyrics are sung deep into the night. As the song progresses, it moves from a slow, melodic tune to a more powerful one, highlighting the somber times that the characters are in.
