In 1961 he married Christine Sèvres. During his carrer, Ferrat has had some difficulty with the authorities owing to his humanist perpective and links with communism.
His most famous songs are: Que serais-je sans toi, Heureux celui qui meurt d'aimer, Potemkine, La montagne, Les feux de Paris, L'amour est cerise and many others.
His lyrics are very much influenced by french poet Aragon.
Lorsque S'en Vient Le Soir
Jean Ferrat Lyrics

The lyrics of Jean Ferrat's song "Lorsque S'en Vient Le Soir" evoke a sense of longing and impassioned love. The opening verse sets the scene of the arriving evening, which brings about a deep sense of being alive, akin to a sudden immersion into a field of wheat. The singer of the song is then reunited with his lover, who he seems to cherish deeply. Their connection goes beyond the physical realm, as they both shed their clothes and become one. The second stanza continues to highlight the intensity of the love between the two, as the singer admits that nothing can calm this need to be with his beloved.
The song continues to detail the struggle of being apart from one's lover, while simultaneously highlighting the joy of reuniting with them through the simple gesture of a look or touch. The rich imagery used throughout the song, such as the use of the field and wheat as metaphors for love and growth, increases the emotional impact of the lyrics. Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the complexities of passion and the all-consuming nature of deep love, with the evening serving as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human existence.
