Hailing from Melbourne and comprising guitarist Cameron Muncey, drummer Chris Cester, bassist Mark Wilson, and frontman Nic Cester, the foursome formed just as the new millennium was beginning. They quickly self-released 2002's Dirty Sweet, a vinyl-only EP that proved to be quite popular in Australia. The EP sold out of its initial run of 1,000 copies, and Jet's acclaim grew in the U.K. as they issued another limited-edition run. An American deal with Elektra surfaced in early 2003, and the Dirty Sweet EP was released domestically that May. An opening slot for the Rolling Stones in Jet's homeland soon followed. With buzz brewing about the band's skuzzy, old-fashioned hard rock, Jet's proper studio debut arrived in November under the title Get Born.

With its crisp guitars and start-stop tempos, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" became a radio favorite worldwide, and Get Born sold over three million copies as a result. Jet also received seven ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) nominations, six of which were awarded to the band. European dates with Oasis followed in summer 2005, and the sophomore effort Shine On arrived in fall 2006. The band maintained a steady touring pace and contributed a song to the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. Following a short break, Jet reconvened in 2008 to begin work on a third album, which arrived one year later as Shaka Rock. They toured as support for Green Day and Powderfinger, but went on hiatus in 2010 and were fully disbanded in 2012. Jet were back in business after several years, however, playing headlining shows in Australia during early 2017.Jet is an alternative rock band which formed in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia. The band consists of Nic Cester (vocals, guitar), Cameron Muncey (guitar, vocals), Mark Wilson (bass) and Chris Cester (drums). They have released three albums: "Get Born" (2003), "Shine On" (2006) and "Shaka Rock" (2009). The band has had international hits with the singles "Are You Gonna Be My Girl", "Look What You've Done", "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" and "She's A Genius". The band split in March 2012 but reformed in 2016.

The band formed in 1974 with a line-up of Andy Ellison (vocals, ex-John's Children, solo artist), Martin Gordon (bass, ex-Sparks), Chris Townson (drums, formerly in John's Children and Jook), David O'List (lead guitar, ex-member of The Nice and an early member of Roxy Music) and Peter Oxendale (keyboards for a short-lived live version of Sparks). Not in a dogfight, but in BVR combat, where 99% of modern fighter combat occurs, it would win
It has a much radar and stealth

The F-35 is a great fighter jet
It can effectively do CAS, SEAD, air superiority, interceptor, bombing, etc, a lot of the time better than dedicated 4th gen fighters

And the cost is overstated a lot of the time, as it's much cheaper than an F-15 II, ( around 135 million ), around the cost of an what F-16 Block 70 are selling for ( 70 mil )
And the maintenance cost is currently 28 thousands, which is going to decrease to 22 thousands as a better logistics network is built

An F-16 costs 20 thousands to maintain, which will only get higher as the airframes get older

There is like 5 articles on the first page that mention how the F-35 is a much better option over the Rafale because of a 37 million dollar price difference between each individual aircraft

The kicker being that the F-35a costs 31k per flight hour
Where as the Rafale costs 21k per flight hour
Js though, the F-22 costs 150 mill per unit, and costs 65k per flight hour

The F-35 is just as expensive as the F-18 which comes in at 32k per hour
And the F-15 comes in at 29k per hour

The F-35 is not an expensive plane compared to any other American Airframe

The Eurofighter is 124 million a pop, while costing 23k per flight hour

They just belong to the same “family”
Like the F-15 Eagle and the F-15E Strike Eagle
Or with the F-18 and it’s variants

They may be based on the same original airframe, but they are very different aircraft

A F-15 put up against a F-15E is gonna be very lop sided

The biggest problem is too many fingers in the cookie jar. New requirements are added in real time never allowing the engineers to find a finishing point. Almost everytime something is changed, alot of the associated components require retesting to makesure the aircraft is still airworthy. This takes alot of time and money, sometimes the goal posts are moved before initial testing is finished.

The main flaw of this plane is that it combines various mission types too expensive ,while you can do them at a lower cost separately. Particularly, you can do drone strikes at a cheaper cost now compared to 15 years earlier which makes close air support role of F-35 at this higher cost obsolete.

@GetTheFuckOutofH3re1 F22 is starting decommission in less than 1 year. NGAD hasn't even pass the prototype phase. Plus F22's design is limited to land base launch only. So in other words, the U.S army is forced to use this "utility" jet for at least the next 10-20 years.

The problem was Lockheed needed to cater to the needs of the different branches of service, resulting in redesigns as additional components are added to add more capabilities not in the original prototype, causing not only cost over-runs but also ruining the time table because the new additions needed to be added to most if not all the post-manufactured F-35's retro-actively.

This dynamic needs to change. The branches of service need to compromise on which capabilities to prioritize and which to do without, then redesign their missions and ops to match the capabilities of the aircrafts, accordingly.

I'm not sure if there was ever a historic precedent for this. No doubt some will say this is traditionally and historically unheard of, unacceptable and even impossible. However tradition needs to give way to logistical, chronological and financial necessities. If not, then you end up with good projects ending up as shelved products like the Sgt. York and the Comanche. Though Naval Littoral ships were stupid ideas from the get go.

It makes me wonder if the costs are that high because of the actual costs of production or if those who sell these items to the military are just trying to gouge them on the pricing knowing they'll either eventually fork it over or ask for more tax dollars from Congress? Just something to think about.

One of the biggest mistakes was trying to combine 3 planes in one, especially the STOVL F-35B. It's basically a stealthy supersonic Harrier successor.
The other one is not using all those methods to cheapen it up, like they do with new designs(NGAD, B-21 etc.)

The cost of technology always comes down over time. But we NEED to have our military capabilities to be SO FAR ahead of any other nation so that noone ever threatens us. It's definitely a chicken and an egg type situation. But weakness will INVITE aggression from other bad actors.

The funny thing is, they stopped producing the F22, because "too expensive" . The 2nd thing: This was supposed to be a low-cost jet like the F16 was in the 1960s /1970s. I love the fiscal madness at play here.

That’s addressed in the video. It will get software and sensor updates every few years. Also engine and other hardware suite updates throughout it’s 50 year service life. That’s all part of 1.7T dollar projected program cost including projected inflation, R and D, procurement and production, maintenance, training, expected flight time, the whole package. 1.7T spread over 50 years for 2000+ units and keeping them up to date while continuously lowering maintenance cost is a good value for any fighter jet when adjusted for inflation. And don’t forget that isn’t 1.7T that the US will pay for fully, NATO allies are purchasing this jet from the US which subsidizes the cost.

Now specifically how was that cost analysis broken down? I don’t know. I’m not an engineer in the aeronautics, mechanical, software, or electrical field. Was it done accurately? Will it be worth that amount to safeguard the people, ideals, and economies of all NATO countries? No one knows. It hasn’t been 50 years since the development started to add it all up and then attempt to quantify what net economic benefit having this fighter and its capabilities spread all through NATO countries will be vs not having it at all.

And there isn't really anything in the F-35 that is going to be outdated, even in another few decades
Being stealthy will always be an advantage, just because it's much easier to hide it in electronic clutter, it will get detected much later than a non stealthy jet, and it will always be an advantage

Military technology is always decades ahead of its time. With such massive budget they can research areas that are impossible or not worth for any private company. GPS project started in 1973, was released in 78, made public in 83, made mainstream in 2007 and still impressive today, 49 years later. If no one else is researching, the only outcome is you having a new technology besides being from 20 years ago.

The way I see it is that the R&D that goes into developing these shouldn't be entirely capitalized into each F-35 - that same R&D paves the way for successive jets and other designs for it's "cousins", so I think the USA is on a good thing here. If it's too expensive for you, sell it to other allied countries who pay hundreds of millions per jet and that ultimately brings down the cost of each of the "thousand plus" F-35's in USA's military.

A single-engine aircraft like the F-35 is also easier to produce. But if there's an engine failure the entire aircraft goes down. Capability wise the F-35 is way better since it has the latest avionics and data-link technologies but i'm talking about the engines and weapons that it can carry.

What people fail to understand is that: 1 trillion involves maintenance, software, operator training, and other costs for its operational life until 2070. No "Legacy"/"Teen Series" fighter development (F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18) has been calculated this way.

Yak-141 is the basis of the VTOL variant... Russian concept and prototype that was accessed and put into play by Skunkworks. Pretty sure once engaging a target the surprise factor become redundant as pilots use visual target acquisition during a dogfight. This aircraft is overhyped and over budget, any country willing to run them would be better off flying a different manufactures aircraft at cheaper costs as the last real air to air war was Vietnam. There will probably be drone aircraft in the next few years with even greater stealth capabilities and more cost effective/combat efficient.

What Buisness insider failed to mention is that the 1.7 trillion is over the lifetime of the F-35 fleet. Other than development costs, nothing has been paid.
IF the military bought 2,000 of these jets, they would pay the 1.7 trillion, and also pay over the fleet's lifetime. They haven't spent any actual money on this yet..
No 1.7 trillion has been paid, and the only ones bought/made were for development from lockheed.

Pretty soon UAV's will take over. They are a hell of a lot cheaper because you don't have to design around a human, the cockpit, user interface, ejection seat, etc. Plus the maneuverability of the aircraft will not be limited by the physical limits of a human body and you don't have to risk a highly trained expensive pilot. The pilot can be safely located very far away if there is a need for one at all. They already have some that are full autonomous from take off and landing to surveillance and weapons deployment.

F/A18, F15E/X, A10, Harrier, F22 and F117.

Yes the cost of procurement, development and maintenance is staggering, but keep in mind that it stands in the place of seven separate procurement processes that would eat up trillions of dollars as well.

And with certain exceptions, like dogfighting at medium to high altitudes and a higher maximum A2A loadout over the F-22, the F-35 is superior. Besides the aspects I've already mentioned, t's significantly cheaper than the F-22. It's cheaper than the A-10 modernisation package. It's easy to repair, requires only a crew of two and a trailer to replace the engine. It's got more power, it's got superior radar. It's electronic warfare capabilities are unmatched over any other aircraft except perhaps the 737 AEW&C or the EC-130H, but those aren't fighters. The only other fighter that's specialised enough to be worth considered as a side-purchase is the EA-18G Growler, for its specific superior escort jamming capabilities.

The F-35 carries less A2A missiles on stealth configuration than the F-22 (the F-35 still carriers a superior strike capability on stealth than the F-32). That's still more than all the other aircraft mentioned. Block 4 also increases internal weapons to a maximum of 6, along with more efficiency, power, etc. If you decide to run the aircraft on a non-stealth loadout, which is still stealthier than most of the aircraft mentioned, that's a larger maximum payload. F-16, F-15, F-18, etc you have no choice. You're always running non-stealth whether you like it or not. F-35 gives you the option of flexibility. On a maximum payload, the F-35 is also faster than all the aircraft mentioned.

It hasnt done this ever for other aircraft. Your freaking out over the total price for everything relating to the aircraft for the next. When in reality the f35 is average cost. The f16 life cycle was a little cheaper. The b52 life cycle was more expensive but you don't see people freaking out about those. The military is trying to replace its aging fleet of aircraft and replacing it with the most modern aircraft that will last the next 50-100 years and gain an advantage over enemies.

This is a bureaucratic issue, like Adam said. Not just the oversight, but also the requirements made. The B-2 was a great example. In the middle of the program the DoD demanded it be redesigned to fly low altitude bombing missions, which required the entire back end of the aircraft to be redesigned.

Fast forward to today, and the USAF learned their lesson and allowed Northrop Grumman to stick to the original mission parameters for the B-2 Spirit replacement. The B-21 Raider is on time, on budget, and it was just announced that the first public unveiling will be this December.

If you just let the engineers and businessmen at these companies do their thing, they will get you better results than a bunch of government overlords all with their own agendas making different demands.

Since this aircraft in a 4 man configuration per mission replaces 24 legacy planes it is still far far cheaper on a per mission basis then all those other supporting aircraft in fuel savings alone. Then there are the parts for those extra 20 planes. Then there is the repair crew for each of those 20 extra planes. This plane is far far far far cheaper than the legacy craft it makes unnecessary on a per mission basis.

These may sounds like incredibly expensive figures; 98 million, 78 million, etc, do remember that there are boats and houses that people own that can cost magnitudes more than these jets (For example, Jay-Z's net worth is worth 10-12 of these. The history Supreme can be sold to buy like 40, Jeff Bezos' yacht could buy 5 of these, etc.)

The F-35 is proven to be wildly successful at this point. The cost of each fighter has dramatically gone down due to the insane amount of them being built. Finland, Norway, Netherlands, and Switzerland all chose the F-35 even over 4.5 gen counterparts. Switzerland themselves stated it was the cheaper option, and now Thailand expressed interest in the F-35 saying it was cheaper than the Gripen. The 1.7 Trillion dollar is an estimate of the cost of procuring thousands of F35's, the R&D, maintenance. upgrades, flight time, all over the span of 50+ years.

The F35 also has the most advanced sensor suite of any fighter right now, and the ability to data link with other fighters, warships, and ground systems as well. An F35 can provide targeting data to an AEGIS destroyer, and that AEGIS destroyer can launch missiles based on that, just as an example. Even in terms of maneuverability, it is said to be comparable to a combat-loaded F-16. But with how advanced the F-35's sensors are, maneuverability doesn't matter that much if you can snipe your targets from 100+ miles away with a missile; also the extreme high off-boresight capabilities for the AIM 9X make maneuverability less important even within visual range situations.

The best documentary for the f35 is hypohystericalhistory of the f35. Long story short it’s 1.7 trillion for the entire length of the program, people say it’s worst than the f15 but when it was first tested the pilot was mad it was in limp mode

if 1 f35 is able to take out multiple enemy jets without compromising the pilots, its worth it. The most valuable resource is the trained pilot and not the aircraft.

And to think, rapidly advancing computer vision and other pattern-matching AI is just going to make this thing's stealth capabilities pointless and obsolete before long.
For almost every mission these planes fly, we could just launch a cruise missile or a drone strike at the same target at a tiny fraction of the cost. Those are the technologies we should be investing in. Autonomous weapons systems that fly themselves, and only need to fly one time, are so much better as a concept.

@Winston Deleon Hmmm, you may actually be right. Advancements in AI with quantum computers might be sufficient enough to accurately determine whether it’s actually found a stealth aircraft or just background noise. If we can detect planets from millions of light years away, we can detect stealth aircraft. But then again, this would make non-stealth aircraft even more vulnerable since theoretically they could be detected even farther, meaning VLO designs would still technically be viable. I think in this situation we’re both correct in many ways.

@Vincent Phan Stealth won't be viable for long because there's no stealth technology that works like a literal cloaking device and hides all possible indicator signals. Any sufficiently identifying signal can be recognized and correlated by sufficiently advanced AI trained to make that recognition, and stealth materials and design technology absolutely is not advancing in signal masking capability faster than AI is advancing in signal recognition capacity.

@Winston Deleon He’s right though, the presence of fighter jets simply do not compare to drone strikes (I’m assuming you mean current drones today, not future) and cruise missiles. During the first few weeks in Ukraine, Russia launched over 1,000 ballistic missiles and cruise missiles into Ukraine. It launched more than 100 Iskander-M TBMs in the first hour of the invasion and hundreds of missiles from 3M14 Kabilr (Russian equivalent to US tomahawk) to air-launched kh-101. Aircraft aren’t going anywhere soon.

It has been what, 7 months into the war? And Russia has failed to achieve air superiorty despite their initial numbers and losses, and have even been pushed back from Kherson. They’ve already lost 77% of their fleet in Ukraine and roughly 18% of their military force. Also, stealth technology advances along with computers, so stealth will always be viable.

Hey insider this is over a 50+ year life span for what is in effect 3 different platforms with parts modularity. Do not forget it is replacing legacy aircraft as well so the cost of retraining is included. You can't take a A-10 piolt and stick him/her in to an F35A and say fly they will crash. Also the cost includes RnD training both of piolt and ground crew/filght deck handlers, rebuilding of the factory and disposal of aircraft after service, however knowing the US they will keep the aircraft in service long after its life span. The aircraft represent a fundamental shift in thinking of the US military, instead of having multiple aircraft to meet the needs of the different branches buy creating a fighter that includes all with parts modulelarity is in the long run cost effective. Remember it is the same thing with tanks one baise model then specially models built on the original.

You can’t have an aircraft with the same airframe used for army, navy and the airforce. It just doesn’t work. The short wings good for army and maybe navy but not so manuverbility for the airforce etc etc. IMO

I do realize that. What I actually meant was that constantly changing governments bring constantly changing policies that harm the funding processes in these contracts. The competition faced by the one who funds the research is different in nature by the competition faced by the contract chasers.

It seems like the fighter jet itself is amazing, its the mismanagement that's the problem. Do we really think the mismanagement would be any different on a 'cheaper' fighter jet? It seems like you would settle for a worst product with the same mismanagement. Consider the global tensions right now I find it hard to stomach you would want less F-35's. In a conflict situation, assuming the fighter jet doesn't get bombed on the ground, they would dominate anything in the skies.

I'm from the UK and I understand, from the results of our government , that people in government cannot decide which aircraft they want. So over the period of its development continually change the goal posts.This will drive up costs and it does considerably. Its like asking a car manufacturer to produce a car that is a saloon, coupe, limousine, open top or sports car all in one! Unfortunately our last built aircraft in the UK was in that position-now we have no aircraft industry.

Who says it s controversial jet? That sounds like conjecture, not necessarily fact. Maybe the plane, is worth the cost? Better safe than sorry, if and when, the you know what, hits the fan. Fix it, and "launch all planes," is more of a "can do," attitude you could argue.
