The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s and the departure of singer Rob Halford in 1992. Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Winter's Bane, replaced Halford in 1996 and recorded two albums with Judas Priest, before Halford returned to the band in 2003. The current line-up consists of Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance, with their most commercially successful line-up featuring Ian Hill, Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, guitarist K. K. Downing, and drummer Dave Holland. Tipton and Hill are the only two members of the band to appear on every album.
Halford's operatic vocal style and the twin guitar sound of Downing and Tipton have been a major influence on heavy metal bands. Judas Priest's image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. The Guardian referred to British Steel as the record that defines heavy metal. Despite a decline in exposure during the mid-1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2006, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and having their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series. In 2022, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Fire Burns Below
Judas Priest Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't know what to say
But that look in your eyes
Give it all away
You say you've got these feelings
You can't put into words
But you don't have to say a thing
Give me one good reason
Why this has to be
That's all I'm asking for
Don't say that it's over
When you and I both know
You can't put out this love
The fire burns below
We've been through so much together
We've laughed and we've sometimes cried
To say our love ain't working - well we
Haven't really tried
But why let's talk things over
Love can't be bought and sold
One more night together's what the future holds
What the future holds
Well give me one good reason
Why this has to be
I said that's all I'm asking for
Can't you see I said
You can't put out the fire down below
The lyrics to Judas Priest's song "Fire Burns Below" describe a conversation between two people who are struggling with their feelings for each other. They stand facing each other, unable to find the right words to express what they're feeling, but the look in their eyes says it all. One person admits to having intense feelings they can't explain, but the other knows what they mean without any explanation. Despite this, one person is ready to end things, but the other refuses to let go of the love that still burns between them.
The lyrics tell a story of love that's worth fighting for, even when things seem uncertain or difficult. The singer urges their partner to give them one good reason why they should end things, but ultimately, they know that their love is too strong to simply go out. Even if they've been through hard times before, they believe that they haven't really tried to make their love work. The singer suggests talking things over and giving their love one more chance, because one more night together is all that's needed to see what the future holds.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of hope and determination - a reminder that love is worth fighting for, even when it feels impossible. They encourage listeners to believe in themselves and their relationships, and to hold onto the fire that still burns below.
