The song "Die Gelse" by Ludwig Hirsch captures the frustrations of trying to sleep peacefully while being constantly bothered by a blood-thirsty mosquito in the bedroom. The opening lines, "fiat di Gott gute Nacht, in unserm Zimmer is a Gelsen" which translates to "good night in our room there is a mosquito" express the exhaustion and annoyance felt by the singer. The repetition of "Ein Schaf, Zwei Schaf, Drei Schaf" (One sheep, two sheep, three sheep) is a common sleep aid technique used to try and fall asleep and emphasizes the singer's desperation to get some rest.
As the song progresses, the frustration reaches a boiling point as the singer contemplates violent actions against the mosquito, even musing about killing it or throwing the body in a nearby pond. The lyrics "Jetzt schimpf ned und schlaf!" (Now, stop complaining and go to sleep), spoken to the singer's partner, show the effect that the mosquito is having on their relationship.
Overall, "Die Gelse" is a humorous yet relatable song that captures the annoyance and desperation of trying to sleep while being tormented by a mosquito. It highlights the fact that even the smallest and seemingly insignificant things can disrupt one's life.
