He received his initial training under his legendary uncle Krishna Dey. Later he migrated to Mumbai to gain foothold in Hindi cinema.
Mention of this great singer immediately brings into mind such unforgettable classical-based melodies as Bhai bhanjana, Sur na saje, Pucho na keise maine, Chham Chham baje re payaliya. In fact, whenever composers used to have a great classical composition in their minds, they would invariably take Manna Dey.
Interestingly, in spite of his solid classical background, he was equally at ease in all types of songs, be it Romantic - Yeh raat bheegi bheegi, Jaha bhi jaati hoon wohi chali aati ho, Dil ki girah khol do, Saanjh dhali; peppy - Aao twist karen; folksy - Chalata musafir moh liya re, door hain kinara; sad - Kasme Wade pyar wafa sab, Tum bin jeevan keisa jeevan; funny - Khali dabba khali botol, mere bhais ko danda; quali - Ai mere johra jevin, Yaari hain imaan mera; spiritual- Laaga chuneri mein daag; or philosophical - Zindegi keisi hain paheli, Tum besahara ho to; ghazal - Neino se yon baat kare.
One unique contribution is his famous rendition in music of the equally famous Madhushala written by Dr. Haribans Rai Bachchan the father of equally illustrious Amitabh Bachchan.
He is a composer in his own right, composing mostly in Bengali innumerable hit songs.
Readers may contribute their view in this regard and build up voice to urge upon the Indian Government in this regard.
Real great Review

Seedhi si baat na mirch masaala
Kehke rahega kehne waala
Dil ka haal sune dil waala
Chhote se ghar mein gareeb ka beta
Main bhi hu maan ke naseeb ka beta - 2
Ranj-o-gham bachpan ke saathi
Aandhiyo mein jali jeewan baati
Dil ka haal sune dil waala
(Haay karu kya surat aisi,
Gaanthhke poore chor ke jaisi) - 2
Chalta phirta jaanke ek din,
Bina dekhe pehchaan ke ek din
Baandhke le gaya pulis waala
Dil ka haal sune dil waala
Budhhe daaroga ne chashme se dekha -2
Aage se dekha peechhe se dekha,
Upar se dekha neeche se dekha
Bola ye kya kar baithhe ghotaala,
Haay ye kya kar baithhe ghotaala
Ye to hai thaanedaar ka saala
Dil ka haal sune dil waala
Gham se abhi azaad nahi main
Khush magar aabaad nahi main -2
Manzil mere paas khadi hai,
Paau mein lekin bedi padi hai
Taanga deta hai daulat waala,
Dil ka haal sune dil waala
Sun lo magar ye kisi se na kehna
Tinke ka leke sahaara na behna -2
Bin mausammal haar na gaana,
Aadhi raat ko machchil laana
Varna pakad lega pulis waala
Dil ka haal sune dil waala
The song "Dil Ka Haal Sune Dilwala" by Manna Dey communicates a heartfelt message of simplistic honesty and reliability. The song begins with the insistence that the heart's condition should be heard without any embellishments or spices, indicating a straightforwardness that is both refreshing and rare. The singer goes on to describe the hardships of his youth, including poverty, suffering, and a lack of basic necessities. Despite all of this, he maintains a positive outlook and gratitude for his lot in life, recognizing that he is fortunate simply to be alive and breathing. He then describes a run-in with the police, which further highlights the theme of truthfulness and the importance of honesty.
The song concludes with a plea not to trust outsiders, but rather to rely on oneself and those closest to you. It suggests that life is full of challenges and uncertainty, but that honesty and resilience can help us overcome them. This upbeat and uplifting message, combined with the song's catchy rhythm and memorable lyrics, has made "Dil Ka Haal Sune Dilwala" a classic in the world of Indian music.

My grandfather loved this song. In his later years, He was diagnosed with dementia, so for most of my lifetime he couldn't recognise me, but he always remembered this song - word to word and would always sing it in front of me. Today he his not here, but for me his memory lives on through this song. Love you Naanu, hope you're doing good <3
