Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Si sentiva soltanto il rumore del fiume la sera
Ti ricordi lo spazio
I chilometri interi
Automobili poche allora
Sembrava l'America
E chi l'ha vista mai?
E zitta e zitta poi
La nevicata del '56
Roma era tutta candida
Tutta pulita e lucida
Tu mi dici di sì
L'hai più vista così?
Che tempi quelli
Na na, na na, na na
E Roma era tutta candida
Tutta pulita e lucida
Tu mi dici di sì
L'hai più vista così?
Che tempi quelli
The lyrics of Mia Martini's song "La Nevicata del '56" transports the listener back in time to a simpler and more idyllic era. At the beginning of the song, the singer reminisces about a time when the only sound to be heard in the evening was the roar of a nearby river. They recall how there were few cars on the road and only a select few songs played on the radio, typically accompanying a father shouldering his child to a sports match. Even the fountain sang, and the air felt pure and clear. The singer implores the listener to confirm that this was indeed how it used to be.
The singer also recalls a specific childhood memory of a carousel that used to be located near their house. They would often dream of wearing a fancy dress with lots of layers, while an older woman had already lived out that fantasy. The days were always sun-drenched, and the nights were as beautiful as the days. The singer notes how the moon was even more stunning back in the day, leaving the listener to wonder what has dulled its luster. How could it have been possible that there was even room for fairy tales in this society? Then, almost as an aside, the singer remembers the snowstorm of 1956, which fell discreetly on the city of Rome, covering everything in white and giving it a fresh start.
