Souchon signed his first contract in 1971, but had no success until he began to collaborate with composer/arranger Laurent Voulzy ; they would write together, but each released albums under his own name. Souchon's first hit was "J'ai 10 ans" (1974), from the album of the same name. Souchon's biggest hit was probably "Foule Sentimentale" from 1995's C'est Deja ca. His recent album is from 2005, called La Vie Theodore which features his song "Et si en plus, y'a personne" [What if, even more, there is no one], a song condemning religious intolerance.
He wrote the theme for François Truffaut's 1979 film Love on the Run (L'amour en fuite).
REVEUR

On voyait nos baisers gagnants
Les filles se déshabillaient tout l' temps
Oh, oh, oh, oh rêveurs
On était rêveurs
Au Virginie conventionnel
On mêlait des herbes ascensionnelles
Et du haut de ces cerfs-volants riants
On voyait le vieux monde s'en allant
Et venir à nous ces nouveautés
La Paix, l'Amour et la Liberté
Oh, oh, oh, oh rêveurs
On était rêveurs
Qu'a fait: The times, they are changin'
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh rêveurs
On était rêveurs
On était rêveurs
On voyait nos baisers gagnants
Les filles se déshabillaient tout l' temps
The song "Rêveur" by Alain Souchon is a nostalgic reminiscence of the idealistic and hopeful days of youth compared to the harsh and disillusioned realities of the present. The lyrics start with a reference to Hinduism, presenting a notion of tranquility and serenity that the singer and his peers longed for. They dreamed of a world with no more violence or fights, where love and peace reign. The girls were always taking off their clothes, suggesting carefree behavior and openness to new experiences.
The middle part of the song mentions the "Virginie conventionnel," likely a reference to a political gathering where they mixed "herbes ascensionnelles," or mind-altering drugs, with "cerfs-volants riants," or kites, to see the world from a different perspective. They envisioned a world where peace and love were the norm, and everyone lived freely. However, gradually, the world changed due to market forces, represented by the CAC, a French stock market index. The idealistic dreams of the youth have vanished, replaced by a harsh reality where life is cheaper than an iPod. The singer is now waiting for his security guards before he can sing and dance freely, under the scrutiny of surveillance cameras.
Overall, "Rêveur" portrays the disappointment and disillusionment that comes with maturing and realizing that the world is not as idyllic as we once thought. Still, the song contains a hint of nostalgia and longing for the past and the innocence of youth, making it a touching and relatable piece of music.
