The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.
I Wanna Dance with Somebody
Glee Cast Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I wanna dance!
Clocks strikes upon the hour and the sun begins to fade
Still enough time to figure out how to chase my blues away
I've done alright up till now
It's the light of day that shows me how
And when the night falls, my lonely heart calls
Oh, I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me
Oh, I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me
I've been in love and lost my senses, spinning through the town
Sooner or later the fever ends and I wind up feeling down
I need a woman who'll take a chance
On a love that burns hot enough to last
So when the night falls, my lonely heart calls
Oh, I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me
Oh, I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat
Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me
(Somebody who, somebody who)
Santana:
Somebody who loves me, yeah
(Somebody who, somebody who)
To hold me in her arms, oh
Brittany:
I need a woman who'll take a chance
On a love that burns hot enough to last
Both:
So when the night falls, my lonely heart calls
Oh, I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me
Oh, I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me
Santana:
Ohhhh, ohhhh (Dance!)
Come on baby, hahahaha (Dance!)
Brittany:
Ooh!
Yeah! (Dance!)
Santana:
Now get with this, hahaha
Woaah
Brittany and Santana:
Don't you wanna dance (Dance!)
Santana:
With me baby?
Brittany and Santana:
Don't you wanna dance (Dance!)
Santana:
With me girl?
Brittany and Santana:
Don't you wanna dance (Dance!)
Santana:
With me baby?
Brittany and Santana:
With somebody who loves me
Don't you wanna dance, say you wanna dance
Don't you wanna dance? (Dance!)
Don't you wanna dance, say you wanna dance
Don't you wanna dance? (Dance!)
Don't you wanna dance
Santana:
Say you wanna dance?
Uh huh (Dance!)
Brittany and Santana:
With somebody who loves me
The Glee Cast's cover of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is an upbeat and fun rendition of Whitney Houston's 1987 hit. The song expresses a desire to find someone to dance with and feel the heat of passion. The first verse talks about time running out but still having time to chase away the blues. Then it transitions to talking about how the light of day reveals how one has been doing but when night falls, the lonely heart calls for someone to dance with. The singer has been in love before but ended up feeling down after the fever ended. The chorus repeats the desire to dance with somebody who loves them. The song ends with Santana and Brittany asking if the listener wants to dance with somebody who loves them.
While the song's meaning is relatively straightforward, the lyrics still convey a sense of longing and yearning for connection with someone. The pairing of Brittany and Santana adds a layer of complexity to the song, as they are both queer women who are singing about wanting to dance with someone. Overall, the message of the song is universal and can be applied to any situation where someone wants to find a connection with someone else.

I will not say that this is better than the original. Whitney is too amazing for that.
That said, I truly think that the singer in this version
doesfeel the same energy and spirit that Whitney felt when performing this. Very good for her!@sarahfronsee2470
They both definitely felt the same energy as Whitney did

The fact that heather Morris (the main singer who played Brittany) was hired to be a dance teacher and is now here singing solos with her on-screen girlfriend is amazing

oh my gosh, I am sick of seeing on every Glee related video 'rip cory' every other comment no matter if he sings the song or not. Ok, yes, I miss Cory dearly but why can't we appreciate Naya's and Heather's talent for 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' instead mourning over Cory when he doesn't even sing this song! *Gives reality slap*
