Dassin was born in New York City to Jules Dassin (Yiddish actor and film noir director) and Béatrice Launer. He began his childhood first in New York and Los Angeles, California. However after his father became a victim of the anti-communist policies of Senator Joseph McCarthy, he and his family moved from place to place across Europe.
After studying at Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, Dassin moved back to the United States to go to college at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan after doing very well on his bachelor's exam. After college, he moved back again to France where, while working at a radio station, a record label convinced him to begin to record his songs.
By the early 1970s, Dassin's songs topped the charts in France and he became well known. Probably as a recognition of his parents' left leanings, Dassin's records were officially released in the USSR. However, the political views of his parents were not well known to the general public in the USSR, and Dassin's popularity in the USSR should be connected to his talent only. He was also a talented polyglot, recording songs in German, Spanish, Italian and Greek, as well as French and English.
He died of a heart attack during a vacation to Tahiti on August 20, 1980. He is buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California.

Cécilia, quand on a vingt ans
Tu es belle, tu as vingt ans
The song Cécilia by Joe Dassin tells the story of a young woman named Cécilia, who is being wooed by the singer. At the beginning of the song, the singer comments that Cécilia's bed is too hard, but that he still dreams beautiful dreams there despite the discomfort. He goes on to compliment her sweet wine, which he delights in tasting on her lips.
The song then delves into the complexities of their relationship. The singer acknowledges that in one's twenties, it's difficult to be faithful, but he doesn't hold it against Cécilia if she strays. He believes that when they make love, it's a heavenly experience, regardless of the fact that she may receive flowers from other men.
The final verse focuses on the fact that Cécilia is young, and the singer knows that she's just with him to pass the time. However, he believes that there will come a time when he'll hold the key to her house, which he interprets as a symbol of her heart. Despite her flaws, or perhaps because of them, the singer is infatuated with Cécilia and cannot resist her charm.

Cécilia, ton lit est trop dur
Cécilia, your bed is too hard, but we have beautiful dreams on it.
Pourtant on y fait de beaux rêves
However, we have beautiful dreams on it, despite it being too hard.
O Cécilia, ton vin est trop doux
Oh Cécilia, your wine is too sweet, but I love the taste of it on your lips.
But I love the taste of it on your lips, despite it being too sweet.
Cécilia, quand on a vingt ans
Cécilia, when we are twenty years old,
We have all the time to be faithful.
O Cécilia, si tu ne l'es pas
Oh Cécilia, if you are not faithful,
I do not blame you for it.
Tu es belle et dans ton sixième
You are beautiful and in your prime.
When we love each other it feels like we're in seventh heaven.
Et tant pis si quelques fois
And too bad if sometimes,
The flowers you receive are from someone other than myself.
Tu es belle, tu as vingt ans
You are beautiful and you are twenty years old,
And you love me just to pass the time.
Et le temps passe et la saison
And time passes, and the season
Will come when I alone will have the key to your house.

Cecilia, your bed is too hard
Yet there are sweet dreams
O Cecilia, your wine is too sweet
But I like his taste on your lips
Cecilia, when you're twenty
We have plenty of time to be faithful
O Cecilia, if you're not
I do not blame you for that
You are beautiful and in your sixth
When we love each other it's the seventh heaven
And so what if a few times
The flowers you receive are from someone other than me
Cecilia, your bed is too hard
Yet there are sweet dreams
O Cecilia, your wine is too sweet
But I like his taste on your lips
You are beautiful, you are twenty
And you love me to spend time
And time goes by and the season
Will come when I will have the key of your house alone
Cecilia, your bed is too hard
Yet there are sweet dreams
O Cecilia, your wine is too sweet
But I like his taste on your lips
