She released her first, self-produced solo album, Kamien (Stone), in 1996. It was a great success, consisting of melancholy pop songs. In the same year, she was voted ‘Vocalist of the Year’ by the Polish music industry and received a Fryderyk in recognition of her achievements.
In 1997, she received another Fryderyk, this time for the album Zebra, in the category of ‘Composer of the Year’. With Zebra she changed her style, moving in the direction of American soul music.
In 1999, she recorded one of the most popular Polish albums ever, with the Balkan composer Goran Bregović, entitled Kayah & Bregović: it is a blend of old Slavic songs and modern rhythms. Most of the music was composed by Bregović for the band Bijelo Dugme (White Button), which he had been a part of and movie soundtracks that he had worked on. The lyrics are both translations of the original text and inspired. In the same year she was awarded a Wiktor and another Fryderyk, in the category ‘Vocalist of the Year’.
In 2000, she released the album Jaka Ja Kayah which featured pop, jazz, and techno-influenced songs. She also released the single "Aniol Wiedzial" ("The Angel Knew") from the album, duetted with Cesaria Evora in Portuguese, and recorded English-language versions of some of her songs.
She was twice cast in advertisements for Polish mobile phone's Web - Orange POP (formerly Idea POP).

Książki i stół
Nasze marzenia
Przechowasz mnie
Bo dni minionych
Na każdym piętno z nas zostanie
Tak i ja
Pewnego dnia odwrócę twarz
I będzie wiatr jak kiedyś wiał
I zamknę oczy i wtedy znów
Zawsze w sercu mym miejsce
Głęboko nie znajdzie go nikt
Gdzie wciąż kocham ciebie
Zawsze ale nie dziś
I kiedyś stanę z głupią miną
Zawsze w sercu mym miejsce
Głęboko nie znajdzie go nikt
Gdzie wciąż kocham ciebie
Zawsze ale nie dziś
Obiecuję że będzie
Zawsze w sercu mym miejsce
Głęboko nie znajdzie go nikt
Gdzie wciąż kocham ciebie
Ale teraz
Już idź ...
Kayah's "Dzielę na pół" is a song about dividing things in half, which can be seen in the lyrics "I divide books and a table / Our dreams and everything that was left of them." The song presents the idea of dividing something in half, whether it be material things or emotions, and the aftermath of doing so. The internal conflict and sadness that come with dividing things in half are explored in the lines "What will you do with what I give you / With half a heart / With what did not survive for today / Although it was supposed to." The song is about a broken relationship that was not meant to end and leaves the singer questioning what could have been.
The singer poses the question of whether the other person will keep her in their heart as she will always keep a place in her heart for them. The line "I promise that there will always be a place for you in my heart" reflects the notion that love never dies, even if the relationship ends. The chorus also highlights the sense of disappointment and betrayal in a relationship not ending as expected, with the repeated line "not like it was supposed to be."
Overall, "Dzielę na pół" offers a raw portrayal of the melancholy that comes with the end of a romantic relationship that was unexpected. Kayah's powerful vocals add to the emotion of the track, and the song is a beautiful representation of the pain that comes with heartbreak.

I am dividing into two halves
Książki i stół
Books and table, my possessions
Nasze marzenia
Our dreams, aspirations
I wszystko co nam z nich zostało
And everything that we have left from them
Co zrobisz z tym
What will you do with it?
Co oddam ci
What I will give you
Z połową serca
With half of my heart
Z tym co na dzisiaj nie przetrwało
With what did not survive until today
Choć miało
Even though it was supposed to
It wasn't supposed to be this way, it wasn't supposed to be nice
Czy na serca dnie
Will you keep me in your heart?
Przechowasz mnie
Will you store me
Bo dni minionych
Because the days of the past
Na każdym piętno z nas zostanie
Will leave a mark on both of us
Tak i ja
And I too
Pewnego dnia odwrócę twarz
One day I will turn my face away
I będzie wiatr jak kiedyś wiał
And the wind will blow like it used to
I zamknę oczy i wtedy znów
And I will close my eyes, and then again
Przede mną staniesz
You'll appear before me
Tak jak dawniej
Just like before
Just like it was supposed to be, nice
I tak i tak i tak i tak jak nie jest miły
And yet, it's not nice, not like it's supposed to be
It wasn't supposed to be this way, it wasn't supposed to be nice
Obiecuję że będzie
I promise that it will be
Zawsze w sercu mym miejsce
A place in my heart forever
Głęboko nie znajdzie go nikt
Nobody will be able to find it
Gdzie wciąż kocham ciebie
Where I still love you
Zawsze ale nie dziś
Always, but not today
I kiedyś stanę z głupią miną
And someday I'll stand there with a silly face
Pomyślę co by było gdyby było
I'll think about what could have been if it had been
Even though it wasn't supposed to be like that, nice
Obiecuję że będzie
I promise that it will be
Zawsze w sercu mym miejsce
A place in my heart forever
Głęboko nie znajdzie go nikt
Nobody will be able to find it
Gdzie wciąż kocham ciebie
Where I still love you
Ale teraz
But for now
Już idź ...
Just go already ...
