Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Fiume Sand Creek
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sotto una luna morta piccola dormivamo senza paura
Fu un generale di vent'anni
Occhi turchini e giacca uguale
C'erano solo cani e fumo e tende capovolte
Occhi turchini e giacca uguale
The lyrics of Mia Martini's song Fiume Sand Creek describe a massacre that took place in the United States in 1864, known as the Sand Creek Massacre. The singer describes being asleep with their people under a dark blanket and a small dead moon, only to be awoken by the sound of music in the distance. The singer then has a dream and asks their grandfather if it's just a dream, to which their grandfather responds that it is. In the dream, the singer finds themselves bleeding from their nose and experiencing a paradise-like lightning bolt in their ears, while tears flow from their eyes as the snow-covered tree blooms with red stars. The song goes on to describe the violence that occurred during the Sand Creek Massacre, including the singer shooting arrows at the sky and wind to try and save themselves and their people.
Overall, the lyrics suggest a sense of confusion, loss, and despair at the events that took place at Sand Creek, juxtaposed with dream-like imagery that emphasizes the surreal horror of the situation.
