Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Su riviste per uomini soli
Preoccupata di tenere
I seni spinti bene in fuori
Con un brandy tra le gambe
E una moto dietro la schiena
All'inizio ero felice
Io donna, io persona
Avvilita come un oggetto
Come bambola da letto
Io non voglio essere schiava
E neppure esser padrona
Voglio essere soltanto
Una donna, una persona
Sono stata una madre esemplare
Sei bambini da allevare
Un aborto ogni due anni
E io zitta a sopportare
Se il mio uomo mi picchiava
Mi ammiravano i vicini
Il mio odio ed il mio amore
Lo sfogavo sui bambini
Io donna, io persona
Avvilita come un oggetto
Come bambola da letto
Io non voglio essere schiava
E neppure esser padrona
Voglio essere soltanto
Una donna
Sono stata una vedova austera
Sempre forte, sempre nera
Sono stata d'esempio per tutti
Non uscivo mai la sera
Tanti uomini m'hanno cercata
Finché in una notte strana
Ho aperto la mia porta
M'hanno dato della puttana
Io donna, io persona
Invenduta sulla strada
Ma innalzata come santa
Io non voglio essere schiava
E neppure esser padrona
Voglio essere soltanto
Una donna, una persona
The song "Io Domani Io" by Mia Martini speaks to the experiences and struggles of women in different roles in society. The first verse describes the singer as a cover girl, concerned with maintaining her appearance and pleasing men. However, she reflects upon feeling unhappy and pitiful in this role, realizing that she doesn't want to be objectified or controlled. She desires to be seen as a person, not just a woman fulfilling societal expectations.
The second verse delves into the singer's experience as a mother, having to raise six children and endure multiple abortions, all while silently tolerating her abusive partner. The neighbors admire her for her ability to endure such mistreatment, but she vents her hatred and love on her own children. Again, she expresses her desire to be seen as more than just a submissive figure, emphasizing her right to be treated as a person with agency.
In the final verse, the singer becomes a widow who presents a strong and stoic image to the world, never going out in the evenings. However, many men seek her out, and one night she opens her door and is labeled a prostitute. This experience reinforces her yearning to escape being objectified or controlled by others and simply be recognized and respected as a woman and a person.
Overall, the lyrics of "Io Domani Io" highlight the struggles and desires of women to break free from societal expectations and be seen as individuals with their own dreams and aspirations, rather than just objects to fulfill certain roles.

Luis
