Le Laveur De Carreaux
Serge Lama Lyrics

Chez me sieur l'abbй,
C'est pas pareil,
Faut travailler
Religieusement,

Chez me sieur Christian,

Que l'йtй, quand le ciel est beau;
Derriиre mes vitres, je m'installe
Braquant mon regard sur l'infini,
Je voudrais dйcrocher une йtoile

Pour la faire luire toute une nuit,
La faire luire toute une nuit.

Overall Meaning

The song Le Laveur De Carreaux by Serge Lama tells the story of a window cleaner and his observations of the different social classes he cleans for. He notes the contrast between the luxurious homes of a wealthy lawyer and a talented artist, and the humble abode of a religious man. The window cleaner laments the fact that he remains invisible and unimportant, without a place in the sun.

In the first stanza, the window cleaner describes the home of a religious man, Monsieur l'Abbé. His home lacks sunlight and is filled with porcelain saints, studded with gold and satin. Although he is poorly paid, he is content with the fact that the poor box is always full. In the second stanza, he describes the home of a lawyer, where there is expensive furniture and a place in the sun, attained through suppressing the truth. Although he is not a fan of the justice system, he sometimes wishes to take advantage of its bias, given the injustice he has seen. Finally, he discusses an artist's home, where there is taffeta around the chandelier, and he is often given the chance to participate in the artwork. In contrast, the window cleaner's life - working in similar conditions every day - is like an endless summer where he is simply watching from afar. He wishes to be a part of something bigger and brighter.

The song highlights the divide between social classes, and how the chance to 'make it' in society is often reserved for the privileged. The window cleaner is an observer in this world, yearning for more.
