After graduating from Tokyo Keizai University, he worked as a "salaryman" for four years in the advertisement industry. Debuting with a major label EP album release in 1997, his J-Pop music has funk and soul influence, coupled with beautiful and moving lyrics.
Several of his songs have been used in the TV anime show Honey and Clover, including '8gatsu no Serenade', 'Tsuki to Knife' and 'Yubikiri'. Yozora no Mukou ("Beyond the Night Sky"), the song he wrote the lyrics to, and sung by Smap, has appeared in several Japanese music textbooks. More recently, some of his songs have been used in the anime series xxxHolic, most notably the opening theme "19sai". Also, his song 'Yuudachi' ("Evening Shower") was used as the opening theme for the 2000 anime series Boogiepop Phantom. In addition, his song "Manatsu no Yoru no Yume" (A Midsummer Night's Dream) was used as a theme in the first Death Note movie, which came out June 2006.

The song 青空 by スガシカオ (Suga Shikao) speaks about a lost love and how the singer had stopped thinking about this person after some time. The singer had experienced a hectic life, and because of that, the pain they carried inside had dulled, but not completely gone away, and they still thought about the person from time to time. The chorus talks about how even if the singer cannot wipe away all the tears in the world, they will hold onto the small things that this person taught them and treasure them. The second verse questions if this person had known that the relationship would come to a halt, but the singer found comfort knowing that they had once laughed together. The pre-chorus speaks about how the sky above them seems endless, and they are reminded of the vastness of the world that encapsulates both their memories.
The song's lyrics are poetic and relatable to those who have experienced loss or the end of a relationship. The simplicity of the things the singer holds onto and treasures from their time with their loved one highlights the importance of cherishing the small things. The vastness of the world and the sky above them is a reminder of how small their problems are compared to the expanse of the universe.
