The Phantom Of The Opera
Michael Crawford & Sarah Brightman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In dreams he came
That voice which calls to me
And speaks my name
And do I dream again?
For now I find
The phantom of the opera is there
Inside my mind
Sing once again with me
Our strange duet
My power over you
Grows stronger yet
And though you turn from me
To glance behind
The phantom of the opera is there
Inside your mind
Those who have seen your face
Draw back in fear
I am the mask you wear
It's me they hear
My spirit and my voice
In one combined
The phantom of the opera is there
Inside my mind
In all your fantasies
You always knew
That man and mystery
Were both in you
And in this labyrinth
Where night is blind
The phantom of the opera is here
Inside my mind
Sing my angel of music
He's there
The phantom of the opera
Ah
Ah
Ah (sing for me)
Ah (sing my angel of music)
Ah, ah, ah, (sing for me)
Ah
The lyrics of Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman's song, The Phantom of the Opera, express the deep emotional connection felt by the singer and the phantom. The lyrics reflect on how the phantom appears in the singer's dreams, calling out to her with a mesmerizing voice that speaks her name. This haunting voice brings the phantom of the opera alive in her mind, making her wonder if she is dreaming once again.
The song then proceeds to highlight the strange duet between the two protagonists, as the phantom's power over the singer grows stronger by the second. Even when she tries to turn away from him, the phantom's presence remains in her mind. The song then speaks about how the phantom is the mask she wears, and how others are afraid of it. In this part of the song, the phantom's spirit and voice combine, making him a personification of the singer's darkest fears.
The final stanza speaks about the singer's fantasies, emphasizing that she always knew there was a mysterious aspect to her that was reflected in the phantom. As the song draws to a close, the phantom urges the singer, a.k.a his angel of music, to sing for him.

Michael Crawford is the only REAL Phantom. The other's are just playing a part. This man transports women when they hear him sing. I want to melt in his arms. I saw the original on Broadway with MC and SB and I will NEVER forget it. Most beautiful play I have ever seen!!!

I saw him in LA and loved his singing and acting. He is still the best phantom to me but then again he did originate the role.

@gooseandloose
Michael is a combination of beauty, voice, and psychosis. His psyche becomes the phantom, other phantoms are good, but don't have his ability to become the PHANTOM.

I saw Phantom here in Los Angeles with Crawford. He was plenty sexy in the part. His voice is soaring.
