Sunset Boulevard
Alan Campbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sure I came out here to make my name
Wanted my pool my dose of fame
Wanted my parking space at Warners
But after a year

Of one room hell
A Murphy bell
A rancid smell
Wallpaper peeling at the corners

Sunset Boulevard
Twisting boulevard
Secret of the rich
A little scary
Sunset Boulevard
Tempting boulevard
Waiting there to swallow the unwary

Dreams are not enough to win a war
Out here they're always keeping score
Beneath the tan
The battle rages
Smile a rented smile

Fill someone's glass
Kiss someone's wife
Kiss someone's ass
We do whatever pays the wages

Sunset Boulevard
Headline boulevard
Getting here is only the beginning
Sunset Boulevard
Jackpot boulevard
Once you've won, you have to go on winning

You think I've sold out
Damn right I've sold out
I've just been waiting
For the right offer

Comfortable quarters
Regular rations
Twenty four hour
Five star room service

And if I'm honest
I like the lady
I can't help being
Touched by her folly

I'm treading water
Taking her money
Watching her sun set
Well I'm a writer

LA's changed a lot over the years
Since those brave goldrush pioneers
Came in their creaky covered wagons
Far as they could go
End of the line

Their dreams were yours
Their dreams were mine
But in those dreams
Were hidden dragons

Sunset Boulevard
Frenzied boulevard
Swamped with every kind of false emotion
Sunset Boulevard
Brutal boulevard
Just like you we'll wind up in the ocean

She was sinking fast
I threw a rope
Now I have suits
And she is hope
It seemed an elegant solution

One day this must end
It isn't real
Still I'll enjoy a hearty meal
Before tomorrow's execution

Sunset Boulevard
Ruthless boulevard
Destination for the stony hearted
Sunset Boulevard
Lethal boulevard

Everyone's forgotten how they started
Here on Sunset Boulevard

Overall Meaning

The song "Sunset Boulevard" by Alan Campbell is a vivid depiction of the harsh realities of trying to make it in Hollywood. The lyrics reveal a sense of disillusionment and desperation as the singer reflects on his longing for fame and fortune, which has turned into a daily struggle to survive. The opening lines, "Sure I came out here to make my name, Wanted my pool my dose of fame, Wanted my parking space at Warners," capture the ambitious dream of anyone coming to Hollywood. But soon, the singer's dreams are shattered as he describes his dingy living conditions, "Of one room hell, A Murphy bell, A rancid smell, Wallpaper peeling at the corners."

The chorus tells about Sunset Boulevard, the famous street in Los Angeles that has come to symbolize the glamour and horror of Hollywood. The singer describes the street as both tempting and scary, as it lures people with the promise of success but can also destroy them if they're not careful. He also acknowledges that "Dreams are not enough to win a war, Out here they're always keeping score," suggesting that he's come to understand the cutthroat nature of the entertainment industry. Later, the song takes a bit of a turn as the singer admits that while he may have "sold out," he's doing what he needs to do to survive. He describes the luxurious lifestyle he's been able to enjoy thanks to his success and, in a sense, has come to accept that he's just "treading water, taking her money."

I've heard them all, and nobody beats Alan Campbell. You get the cynicism, pragmatism, and his phrasing sounds purely American and of the era the film is set in. If William Holden could sing, I imagine this how he'd sing it too.

No one does Joe Gillis like Alan Campbell, I also love how is voice is pure 1950s.

I had the honor of seeing Alan Campbell/Betty Buckley on Broadway when I was 17. I was blown away by vocals then. I'm glad I can see this video all these years later to appreciate his acting skill- truly a master class on musical theatre interpretation!

I think this guy is better than John Barrowman or Michael Ball. I like both those artists, but this artist's interpretation is spot on with the feeling in the original script.
