Superstar
Murray Head with The Trinidad Singers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time I look at you
I don`t understand
Why you let the things you did
Get so out of hand
You`d have managed better
If you`d had it planned
Now why`d you choose such a backward time
And such a strange land?

If you`d come today
You could have reached the whole nation
Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication
(Don`t you get me wrong)
Don`t you get me wrong
(Don`t you get me wrong, now)
Don`t you get me wrong
(Don`t you get me wrong)
Don`t you get me wrong
(Don`t you get me wrong, now)
Don`t you get me wrong

(Only want to know)
Only want to know
(Only want to know, now)
Only want to know
(Only want to know)
Only want to know
(Only want to know, now)
Only want to know

Who are you? What have you sacrificed?

Tell me what you think
About your friends at the top
Now who d`you think besides yourself

Is he where you are?
Could Muhammmed move a mountain
Or was that just PR?
Did you mean to die like that?
Was that a mistake or
Did you know your messy death
Would be a record breaker?
(Don`t you get me wrong) Don`t you get me wrong

Overall Meaning

The song "Superstar" tells the story of Mary Magdalene's complex feelings towards Jesus Christ. At the beginning of the song, Mary expresses her confusion and frustration about why Jesus would let his life spiral out of control, ultimately leading to his death. She questions his choices and wonders why he would enter a time and place where his message would not be easily spread.

In the chorus, Mary addresses Jesus directly, asking him who he is and what he sacrificed. She wonders whether he is truly the messiah that people claim him to be. The second verse explores Mary's curiosity about other religious leaders and their abilities in comparison to Jesus. She asks if Buddha or Muhammad could perform miracles like Jesus, or if their reputations were simply products of good PR.

Throughout the song, Mary's emotions are conflicted. She is both in awe of Jesus and unsure of his true identity. The lyrics depict her struggle to make sense of the events occurring around her and to understand how Jesus fits into them.

this entire opera would not be possible without the brilliant bass work by Alan Spenner. His rhythms drive this opera. So, let's give thanks for his work. Amen.

@jpurple

what does P.R. means in the song? Public Relations?

@Violet_Lotus_

@@jpurple yes. In other words, was that just a story, to bring people to Mohammad as a savior? It seems that it worked. (By the way, it's not even original. Krishna from the Baghavadgita balanced a mountain on his finger, centuries before).

@alangelder5319

The bass playing on that album is extraordinary - ‘What’s the buzz’, it’s nuts how much groove he’s putting down.

@Violet_Lotus_

@@alangelder5319 no sampling happening there. This was the 1970s. Everything was authentic.

@sirwinston2368

Guitar player here. Regular guitar... going on 45 years. That bass line is phenomenal!!!!

One of the greatest vinyl albums of the 70s. Ian Gillian, and Murray Head, Yvonne Elliman you can’t get any better than that! This has stood test of time! Every Easter it is played by millions of people. This Broadway musical is still being performed. I remember the pushback because this was the first time rock ‘n’ roll was used instead of traditional church music. No one will remember that today.

@mikenuyen4441

I know the entire double album by heart. Only dark brown cover I remember ever made. Seen the movie dozens of times. Regret never seeing the original stage show.

This is so funky - it‘s Andrew Lloyd Weber‘s best, I feel. I sang in the chorus of a version in German (in Hildesheim near Hannover) in about 2002 and got to know it well - had a lot of fun with the production. Like the music more than Phantom which I also sang ensemble in here in Hamburg for one year, 8 shows a week (!!) in about 2015. That was fun too, but this show is so cool!

@easyrolling

Played this album a million times back in the day.. All I can say is legendary, epic, and totally AWESOME
