The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm Ringo and I play the drums
I'm Paul and I play the, ehm, bass
I'm George and I play a guitar
I'm John and I too play guitar, sometimes I play the fool

Overall Meaning

The lyrics are straightforward and serve as an introduction to The Beatles and their instruments. It’s a greeting from the band members themselves, letting their fans know who plays what. Ringo introduces himself as the drummer, Paul as the bassist, George as a guitarist, and John as a guitarist who sometimes plays the fool. This line from John can be interpreted in different ways. It could be perceived as him being self-deprecating or humorous. It could also mean that he sometimes doesn’t take his guitar playing seriously.

I was 14 years old when the Beatles made it big. Today, I’m 73.
Their songs were the soundtrack of my high school and college years. Their impact, their contributions, their influence on music, on our culture for decades, are simply peerless.
Thanks to 21st century technology we can see them together again…
What a tribute!

I'm.75 and feel the same. I sawcthem in concert twice. They do feel like a big part of my life in some ways. Watching the Peter Jackson film reminded me of many memories in those years.
