Third World is a Jamaican reggae group consisting of William 'Bunny Rugs' C… Read Full Bio ↴Third World is a Jamaican reggae group consisting of William 'Bunny Rugs' Clark (vocals), Steven 'Cat' Coore (guitar, cello, harmonica, vocals), Richard 'Richie' Daley (bass, vocals), Herbert Harris (Keyboard), and Tony Williams (drummer).

They were formed in 1973 and are still releasing records today. Their lineup has changed over the years, as has their musical style, although it has not strayed too far from the "roots reggae" style that they are generally categorized as.

With Dean Pond in the touring lineup (Dean Pond, founder of Dub Mystic and one time musical director and drummer for Culture, and V.I. producer of the year) this year (??) should prove to be even bigger for Third World.

I can in general terms

MCS, Military' Sealift Command. Ready reserve ships owned by the US Navy, crewed by the US Merchant Marine.

I had Force Protection training and top tier gear like Gen 4 Night vision, flex cuffs, Kevlar helmets and vests, batons and more.

we had a platoon of National Guard on board. From Puerto Rico. They would be dropping loaded M4 magazines all the time. Face Palm.
Besides small arms we had a MA Duece 50 cal. that could be shifted to either side.
I was a brute back then and have a photo of me holding the massive machine gun in the "Present Arms" position.

Best part was telling the nosy EU marine traffic controllers to fuck off!!....when they wanted to inquire about our cargo and where we were going, where we came from, last port of call, and other invasive BS.

Our radio response as a polite, but firm, "We are from "Merica on a US military vessel. None of your fucking business. Fuck off you EU cucks". Essentially.....

"Don't bother to send any armed boats in our direction. Bad decision for you!!!"
. (We could call in a massive response force if needed).This is all the Mediteranian before we got to the Red Sea and beyond.

That is where I must stop. Was it cool? Hell yes. And Poland was awesome! The sand box, not so much. Shit hole after shit hole.

We could ONLY stop at US Navy bases, Rota Spain, Germany, and the island of Crete. The base at Rota Spain was epic. Been there many times. Poland was an exception, but we had security.
Crete was "meh", the other un-named ports in the Sand Box were ALL shit holes.
Israel? We were NEVER there... at night... for three hours. That NEVER HAPPENED! Capiche?

Then there was the US Navy SPY ship I worked on based in Southern Japan Naval base Sasebo and Naha Okinawa.
Duty was up and down the coast of Commie China.
Five months. SO fucking cool.

not exactly but there's not that many countries from which you can add another 50 million barrels a day(world oil consumption is depressed through high gas taxes in europe and the containing of the petrochemical industry)

You have, mostly unconventional oil reserves, Oil Sands or Tight Oil or both and those are in
-Canada, 6,000,000bbl/d is already on their prime economical production not that room for more
-Australia has like 300 billion barrels of tight oil, but the aussie government hates fossil fuels now, because muh climate.
-Argentina has between 500 to 900 billion barrels of tight oil but development is slow, it will at best case scenario hit a 1,000,000bbl/d by 2023, and the country will likely collapse before 2030, just because it can produce 20,000,000bbl/d doesnt mean it wil
-Venezuela, Like Canada their oil is Oil Sands they still need to import ultralight crude oil from the middle east to export it, thats maybe in a good day 8,000,000bbl/d
-Russia and the ex USSR can add 4,000,000bbl/d
-Algeria, and Libya can definitely increase oil production combined to over 10,000,000bbl/d

It must be said tho that canada and venezuela heavy crude must be upgraded under high pressure and temperature to make synthetic crude oil in order to export it to east asian refineries who focus more on petrochemical production.

One place and one product. The analogy falls off though. Only one planet produced spice. Lots of countries produce their own oil, and America could be a net exporter if we wanted to. For some reason, our politicians semm to want to involve us in mideast conflicts, with no good reason to do so. Some combination of oil investments, military spending and partisan politics perhaps.

@MajorMlgNoob Yeah, and so is strip mining. Not 10 miles from where I live are old strip mine sites. On them are several wind farms generating electricity that is fed into the power grid. Around the wind farms are many square miles of state owned forest and game lands that were acquired by the State from the coal companies. On those lands are public trails, trout streams, deer, bears, turkeys, rabbits and squirrels, and coyotes. Many of the smaller farms that surround this forest can't support themselves on crops, and the land is valuable as recreation property. If the farmers sell, the development would enclose and encroach on the recovering forest. So landowners maintain and suport their farms by allowing fracking on there land, for which they are paid fairly well. The drillers extract natural gas, which, until recently was intended to be piped to ports and shipped to Europe, which attains some of its environmental goals by burning gas instead of coal. We would not have needed to allow Russia to build the NORD pipeline. Our national balance of payments would improve, the dollar would be worth more, and American workers would have benefitted.
Fracking causes nowhere near the damage that strip mining did, but society found a way to get the use of the coal, and improve the state we live in, each at the appropriate time. Fracking provides multiple benefits to society which should be evaluated honestly, not the least of which are economic. If you oppose fracking thinking its dangerous, dirty, or harmful to the environment you are paying attention to partisan politics, not environmental science.

For some slightly bright news, I'm Iranian, and we have a beautiful island in the Hormuz called Kish. It's a free trade zone and has incredible beaches, hotels, scuba diving, and cuisine. It's actually easier for Westerners to get into Kish than most of mainland Iran due to Kish's relaxed visa requirements.

I agree with you that the Strait of hormuz might be the most important Strait as far as oil is concerned .
In my opinion, the suez canal is more critical as far as oil supply is concerned, especially for Europe taking into account the current situation of the war in Ukraine.

We're fully aware of it for ages and been working hard on developing renewable energy... just kidding we're hardly moving forward on that matter due to corruption, accidents, sheer ignorance of people in general haha. Anti-nuclear is very strong because we keep bombing ourselves. Solar panels aren't getting popular because anytime we build them on a slope a landslide kills people because we don't have a flat land. Well, it's not just America. Remember that Britain and France also were heavily involved in the 1991 Persian Gulf War with Iraq (the British actually have some defense pact with Kuwait dating back to the 1890s). All of this is further proof as to how important that one strait is.

Yup, a very important and dangerous strait to navigate. I served on the USS Carl Vinson during Operation Desert Fox in 1998 and we would go into full battle stations anytime we traveled in and out of the Persian Gulf through the Hormuz.

I love the Civilization icons. I was wondering however, China does seem to have decent relations with Russia, another large producer of energy and a somewhat stable relation with Venezuela, another of the worlds top producers. My question is if they could mitigate their reliance on this strait by focusing on these two relations. Likewise, Japan and Korea have strong relations with the US, another top energy producer, and it begs the question of how these partnerships could potentially impact the reliance on the strait. Whether with oil exports or renewable energy sources (Korea is one of the top producers of solar panels) could be a fix for this problem.

I would like to mention a mistake in the animation showed from 1:42. Apparently the trade route to the baltic sea is shown to run north of denmark, but in reality The Kiel Canal links the north- and the baltic sea and saves 250NM instead of using the route around Jutland.

I'm not a navigator, but I'd think that a canal would have a difficult time handling a significant amount of shipping and it may just be easier for some of that traffic to go around the 250 NM. We're not talking about skirting Africa or South America. 250 NM is just around the corner.

@Michael the Kiel Canal handles about 90 ships per day and was built over a century ago. It's actually the world's most frequently used artificial waterway, and very important to trade in Northern Europe. Bit of a miss by the animation used for the video, even if it's not the subject of the video.

In shipping, anything that can knock time off of a trade route is a big deal. That 250 nm time savings each way adds up to huge operational cost savings for shipping companies, even while paying any canal tolls that exist.

The Kiel canal should have shown up in the 2:53 animation close-ups. At 1:42 it is world-wide and excusable especially if it was drawn as a white line in close-up.
The Kiel Canal is an extra release point for the Baltic to North Sea straights.

But, in the same vein, the Welland Canal is a choke point between Great Lakes & St. Lawrence and doesn’t get mention because it is not politically sensitive. But as long as the Danube is ignored so I guess the Seaway can be.

A possible trigger might be with a Taiwan conflict with China (big or small), which at that point, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the strait blocked/restricted. We have several conflicts that are just sparks away from something much bigger. Let's hope patience and common sense, a little luck...and the desire by "most" to keep the wheels turning, the lights on, food on the table and our children safe.

Oil will always be in demand. Fuel is not the only thing we use oil for. A good portion of the worlds plastic uses oil in their production. It is used for heating, electricity, make-up, creyons, computers, cell phones and the list goes on. Anything that manufactures something with either tools or machines, which is about every manufacturing tradecraft, uses oil in some way or another, directly or indirectly. Oil is not going away inside this century and probably not the next either, although the future is the hardest to predict.

Strange thing. All over in the world in Google maps you can see ships transversing the seas and all the straits you brought up at the beginning... except the Hormuz. Not a single ship visible in the gulfs or the strait.

After a quick check of a map, the cargo traffic channels look like they have areas that are shallower than a container ship’s total height. (25m depth vs. 30m keel to top on a mid-sized container vessel). Which means even non-state actors have the capacity to shut down the Strait of Hormuz by sinking a couple of them mid-channel, perhaps with bombs planted while they were in port. 3.2km (2mi) per lane isn’t as wide as one might think for vessels with as much momentum as cargo ships have.

It's hardly worth mentioning Oman as sharing a tiny bit of the Persian Gulf, since the portion that it shares is tiny and most of its coast is not on the Persian Gulf - therefore the strait has no effect on whether goods can be shipped out of Oman.

Timestamp 4:08 states "9 million barrels which is not correct, it should be 90,000,000 barrels" which is 14,308,830,000 liters or about 2 liters per person per day which is only 1/3 of the total energy used when one factors in coal and natural gas. If you have a naval blockade, ships won’t even approach the area because of the risk of being sunk by a warship. I’m sure many ships can make it past a blockade there if they really tried, but the danger of being sunk stops them from trying.

I am now a bar owner/bookkeeper/host/cook/dish washer/janitor/security on a tropical island about 2,500 miles away from the mainland U.S.

It is just a small bar with only 5 employees (2 cousins, 2 employees, & I), so I have to do multiple things. But I am a lot happier now than I have ever been in a very long time.

What would be a real "disaster" for big oil companies would be if Venezuela, home to the world's largest oil reserves, was allowed to sell it's oil unrestricted by the US.
Then oil prices would drop like a rock and Rockefellers all over the world would have to start selling their Rolex's for Seiko's. Everything is just like they want it right now. oil is somewhat renewable as you can make diesel which is a petroleum product but the diesel you can make comes from vegetable oil or other oils which is called biodiesel which is essentially the same thing but some diesel engines cant use biodiesel so do your own research if you are going to use homemade diesel or or bought biodiesel (i may be entirely wrong)

What's even more terrifying is being a submariner deployed for months at a time directly in that area. Now, imagine only having seconds to make a decision rather or not your ship can maneuver at periscope depth or if an emergency deep is required. No one can see you so they're not stopping and just about every ship there can slice open the people tank without much effort.

The US Navy ship I was stationed on traversed the Straits of Hormuz numerous times. On one of those occasions the ship lost all power in the middle of the night. We were DIW (dead in the water). The only weapons system we had at that point was small arms. It was only for about 3 minutes. People were rushing around trying to get the engines and generators back up. It was quite terrifying. Luckily our engines came back on and we made it safely through.

I'd appreciate it if someone who knows more about the situation could clarify something for me. So in recent times, the U.S and China have seemingly entered a Cold War-esque counter balance game where they build influence in opposing countries. For example, the U.S building influence in India while China builds influence in Pakistan. When he was first describing the possible scenario of Iran closing the straights due to hostilities with another power, I assumed they would do so only for trade with those powers, still allowing trade with neutral countries such as China. I assumed they would do this knowing that even the U.S wouldn't risk creating hostilities with a large nation such as China by interdicting foreign trade if was in an active state of conflict with Iran. However, the strategy he implied they were planning; using overwhelming firepower along with mines to prevent trade, would seemingly also prevent their own trade and all foreign trade in the region. As such, how would this not inevitably bring Iran into conflict with China? Though Iran has made quite a few brash decisions, they've also shown themselves able to balance their aggressions in a way that secures their own position without making too many enemies. Due to this, I just find it hard to believe they'd actually resort to the strategy he mentioned in the video. Iran naturally would have no qualms with risking conflict with the U.S, but I just don't think they'd also risk conflict with China at the same time.

I have no better opinion than anyone else I guess, but I have watched this whole area closely, and read everything I could since 1978, when Khomenie first gained public attention.
Iranians are nPersion,ot Arab. This is important because Persions are Shia, and many, but not all Arabs are Sunni. Shia are in a minority in many mideast countries, and because of the religious difference, are often on the outs with the governments. Arabs aligned themselves with Great Britain and America in order to build their military and sell their oil. Persions resent Great Britain for deposing their socialist leader in the 50s. Because America is closely allied with Britain, the US is hated. Because the US is hated, and because we ally with ARAB states we live in a state of perpetual enmity.
Iran has tried to close the Strait more than once. They are fully aware that, (at least until recently Im not sure its true today) closing the Strait means war with the US. It also means that nothing would come in to or out of Iran by sea. The Strait is too narrow, and our military to strong to allow Iran to selectively close the Strait.
Thats where the Chinese come in. (Stay with me). China is currently working on improving their relationship with Afghanistan, which is Iran"s eastern land border. The mountains in both Afghanistan and Iran are mostly unexplored from a mining or drilling standpoint. China needs oil and the regions minerals and metals. Iran wants an overland route, and a reliable but not very transparent 6market for its oil. We'll see what happens, but whatever, it wont be good for us if it isn't handled well.

China is currently working on a large empir. . .trade network in Asia called the Belt and Road initiative. They currently have a contiguous land route all the way from the Middle East, Iran inclusive, to China proper. For Chinese purposes Hormuz will likely be rendered obsolete by a series of international gas and petroleum pipelines. China has also heavily diversified its energy strategy, with big supply commitments from Russia and other petroleum and coal producing nations in this sphere. It may not be a perfect solution, but China has set itself up, and to some extent the rest of Belt and Road, to render Hormuz obsolete. That's great news for China and Belt and Road, It's bad news for western countries that have in the past year gotten the vapors about hydrocarbon production and killed drilling contracts and pipelines.

As you know from the beginning of the history and from the time that human started to write it down, the Persian Gulf was named and called and written "Persian Gulf". I heard in your video that at first your called it " Persian Gulf" as it is but you did not respected it to the end! @RealLifeLore

Ok so yes this would be problematic, but there’s so many other nations that could make up for the shortage in oil and other resources in the meantime during a blockage such as Canada.

@ErzaGR Canadian crude is more expensive to produce but it sells at a discount, nevermind most american refineries with high complexity factors prefer Canadian crude because they are designed to process heavy crude oil, they are retrofitting them to produce more and more petrochemicals using American super-light crude oil

The Bosphorus and Dadanells could bottle a significant part of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. The Russians were rabid about keeping their port on The Crimean Peninsula, but they still suffer from potentially being landlocked with the exception of Vladivostok during the months of heavy sea ice. I think that is why the Russians are developing hypersonic missiles that could even be fired from immobilized ships.

Okay, technically, petroleum can be produced by taking it out of the air and using up some energy.
It's a great energy store.

Doesn't contradict the video, but it is technically possible to obtain without the Middle East or Straight of Hormuz.

I see the importance but looking at that map, if the world were deprived of access to the Persian golf, couldn't they just make a treaty and run some pipelines to Oman etc to access the oceans. I mean, it would suck, it would not be easy or cheap but seems totally doable.
