It was sad when that great ship went down
Sad when that great ship went down
The cold ocean floor will now be your home
Sad when that great ship went down

It was sad when that great ship went down
Sad when that great ship went down
The cold ocean floor will now be your home
Sad when that great ship went down

It was sad when that great ship went down
Sad when that great ship went down
The cold ocean floor will now be your home
Sad when that great ship went down

It was sad when that great ship went down
Sad when that great ship went down
The cold ocean floor will now be your home
It was sad when that great ship went down

It was sad when that great ship went down
Sad when that great ship went down

The cold ocean floor will now be your home
It was sad when that great ship went down

Overall Meaning

Woody Guthrie’s song “When That Great Ship Went Down” is a mournful ballad about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The lyrics express sadness over the tragic loss of life and the fact that those who perished in the disaster will now make their home in the cold ocean floor. The repetition of the refrain “Sad when that great ship went down” emphasizes the heaviness of the tragedy and serves to memorialize the victims.

The song reflects the sense of shock and grief felt around the world after the Titanic, a ship touted as “unsinkable,” tragically sank on its maiden voyage. Guthrie’s plain-spoken, mournful tone captures this collective sense of loss and disbelief. Additionally, his use of repetition and simple, direct language in the lyrics creates a sense of gravitas and solemnity.

Been a fan of guthrie for as long as can remember he turned me onto old timey musc and hes a one of a kind. Im not fond of his politics and commie stuff but whatever different times when he hits he hits hard. Reminds me of hank where there be simple lyrics that pierce you. "Cold ocean foam... and that will be your home" so damn brutal and good
