Souchon signed his first contract in 1971, but had no success until he began to collaborate with composer/arranger Laurent Voulzy ; they would write together, but each released albums under his own name. Souchon's first hit was "J'ai 10 ans" (1974), from the album of the same name. Souchon's biggest hit was probably "Foule Sentimentale" from 1995's C'est Deja ca. His recent album is from 2005, called La Vie Theodore which features his song "Et si en plus, y'a personne" [What if, even more, there is no one], a song condemning religious intolerance.
He wrote the theme for François Truffaut's 1979 film Love on the Run (L'amour en fuite).

Y a des chemins qu'il vaut mieux éviter
Crois-moi
C'est des images transparentes
À chiffonner
Des histoires adolescentes
À oublier
Un chemin de fer à voie étroite
Moi, je regarde ces diapos
Ces films et ces photos
D'été
Pleure pas, cousine,
Souviens-toi câlin câline
Dans les greniers, les soupentes
Pendant qu'elle dormait, ta tante
Romorantin, tu te souviens l'été soixante?
Paris-province
La nuit le parquet qui grince
Au fond du couloir
Ta chambre est dans le noir
Notre petit amour provisoire
Paris-province
La nuit le parquet qui grince
Au fond du couloir
Ta chambre est dans le noir
Notre petit amour provisoire
The song "Calin-caline" by Alain Souchon is a nostalgic look back on the past, particularly on a summer romance. The opening lines advise not to cross the Loire River in summer and to avoid certain paths. The singer then reminisces about "transparent images" and "adolescent tales" that are best forgotten. He recalls a delicate little station and a narrow railway line, and he watches old films and photographs of those summery times.
The chorus is an encouragement to his cousin not to cry, not to feel sad, and to remember their memories of "câlin câline" or tender embraces. He remembers their secret trysts in the attic while their aunt slept, with the creaking of the floor adding to the thrill. He also recalls a particular summer in the late 1960s, which he characterizes as Paris-Province. The memories include two bicycles in the woods, tea in the veranda, and their temporary love affair.
The singer seems to be looking at these memories from a distance, perhaps with a sense of regret or melancholy, but also with a hint of fondness. The lyrics touch on themes of youth, love, and the passage of time, and suggest that certain memories are worth holding on to, even as they recede further into the past.
