Kanha Disena Kuthe
Asha Bhosle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Asha Bhosle's song Kanha Disena Kuthe is an expression of longing and yearning for the love of the divine, represented by Lord Krishna. The singer, filled with desire and passion in her heart, implores for a glance or sighting of her beloved Krishna. She is consumed by her emotions and is unable to contain them, expressing her love in the form of the lyric, "Bawrele mi kahurele dhīr manāchā sute" - Oh, my mad and passionate heart, please be calm and peaceful. Oh, beloved Krishna, where are you?

The second stanza is a plea to the divine friend, Lord Krishna, to come and visit the singer in her dreams. The reference to the kadamb tree suggests a location and a mood entrenched in Hindustani classical music, whereby the serene and evocative environment provides an ethereal canvas for the divine to interact with its devotees. The singer implores to Krishna to sometimes make her laugh and at other times make her weep, thus acknowledging the duality of human emotions. "Nayani majhya bharuni ghyāve sagun rūpa gomṭe" - Oh, one of all forms who resides in the eyes of every devotee, please show me your beautiful form.

The third and final stanza is an ecstatic experience of finally seeing the beloved Lord Krishna. The singer describes the feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to describe the beauty of the beloved that she sees in front of her eyes. "Jhale bedhund rūpa pāhuni, manmohan hridayi thasalā" - The illusion has been shattered, and standing in front of her is the captivating form of Krishna that steals the heart. The song, therefore, becomes an expression of the deep-seated devotion and love that the devotee has for her deity.
