The firstborn son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived at several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He wrote and studied literature as a child and found music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed as a singer and guitarist in the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several Tropicalist and MPB musicians, was threatened by the Brazilian military government and eventually left Brazil for Italy in 1969. However, he came back to Brazil in 1970, and continued to record, perform, and write, though much of his material was suppressed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was awarded the Camões Prize, the most important prize for literature in the Portuguese language.

Te amo, Maria
Na fotografia
Estamos felizes
Te ligo afobada
E deixo confissões no gravador
Vai ser engraçado
Se tens um novo amor
Me vejo a teu lado
Te amo?
Não lembro
Parece dezembro
De um ano dourado
Parece bolero
Te quero, te quero
Dizer que não quero
Teus beijos nunca mais
Teus beijos nunca mais
Não sei se eu ainda
Te esqueço de fato
No nosso retrato
Pareço tão linda
Te ligo ofegante
E digo confusões no gravador
É desconcertante
Rever o grande amor
Meus olhos molhados
Insanos dezembros
Mas quando eu me lembro
São anos dourados
Ainda te quero
Bolero, nossos versos são banais
Mas como eu espero
Teus beijos nunca mais
Teus beijos nunca mais
In Chico Buarque's song "Anos Dourados," the lyrics describe the reminiscence of a past love. The song talks about the singer looking at a photograph of himself and his former love, Maria, and wondering if she has moved on to someone else. The singer talks about leaving confessions on the answering machine, hoping that Maria will hear them and remember their love. The song talks about how the singer is unsure if he still loves Maria or if he is just remembering the romance of years past. The lyrics also express regret for the end of the relationship and the desire to feel the passion of their love again.
The song can be interpreted as a reflection on the glories of the past, the way time shapes and distorts our memories, and the pain of losing a great love. The lyrics of "Anos Dourados" express nostalgia for a time when love was pure, intense, and all-consuming. The mention of the bolero ("Parece bolero / Te quero, te quero / Dizer que não quero / Teus beijos nunca mais") adds to the idea of a lost romance, as it is a passionate and romantic dance.
Overall, the lyrics of "Anos Dourados" present a melancholic, but beautiful, reflection on love and loss.
