I've Got The World On A String
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love!
I've got a song that I sing

I can make the rain go, anytime I move my finger
Lucky me, can't you see, I'm in love
Life is a beautiful thing, as long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so and so, if I should ever let go

I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love

Life is a beautiful thing, as long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so and so, if I should ever let go
I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world

Man this is the life
And now I'm so in love!

Overall Meaning

In Ella Fitzgerald's song "I've Got the World on a String," the singer is in love and feels like they have everything going their way. The title alone is a powerful image, suggesting that the singer is in complete control of their life and everything in it. This sense of control is reinforced by the lyrics, as the singer describes being able to control the weather ("I can make the rain go, anytime I move my finger"), and feeling like they have the world at their command ("I've got the world on a string").

Throughout the song, the singer seems to be in a state of joy and wonder, reveling in the beauty of life and love. This is perhaps best captured in the lines "Life is a beautiful thing, as long as I hold the string / I'd be a silly so and so, if I should ever let go." Here, the singer is acknowledging that their happiness is dependent on their own sense of control and agency, but also that they value that sense of control and wouldn't want to let it go.

What's interesting about this song is that it has been interpreted in different ways over time. Some see it as a celebration of personal power and success, while others see it as a critique of materialism and the pursuit of wealth. One thing is clear, though: Fitzgerald's performance is a masterful example of her ability to convey complex emotional states through her voice and phrasing.

Howso? I’m an avid listener and I think it’s great.

@@bio6588 Hi, probably because I had just listened to Sarah Vaughan's version which to my ear is just very slightly more upbeat while stylistically more bluesy. It's all in the ear of the beholder.
