There's a Small Hotel
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd like to get away, Junior
Somewhere alone with you
It could be oh, so gay, Junior
You need a laugh or two
A certain place I know, Frankie
Where funny people can have fun
That's where the two will go, darling
Before you can count up
One, two, three. For
There's a small hotel
With a wishing well
I wish that we were there together
There's a bridal suite
One room bright and neat
Complete for us to share together
Looking through the window
You can see a distant steeple
Not a sign of people, who wants people?
When the steeple bell says,
"Good night, sleep well,"
We'll thank the small hotel together

We'll creep into our little shell
And we will thank the small hotel together

Overall Meaning

The song, "There's a Small Hotel" by Ella Fitzgerald speaks to the desire for a quiet and intimate escape with a loved one. The singer suggests the idea of getting away with "Junior" to a certain place where "funny people can have fun" and where they can "have a laugh or two." The reference to "Junior" and "Frankie" suggests a sense of familiarity, perhaps between friends or a couple who are seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The song then describes a small hotel with a wishing well, and a bridal suite which is "bright and neat" and is perfect for them to share. The imagery used of looking through the window and seeing a distant steeple creates an intimate and romantic atmosphere. The reference to the steeple bell saying "Good night, sleep well" provides a sense of closure to the day, and reinforces the idea of the couple retreating to their own little world in the hotel.

The song culminates in the couple creeping into their own little shell, free from the distractions of the outside world. The use of the word "shell" provides a sense of comfort, safety and intimacy that is further reinforced with the phrase "we will thank the small hotel together." Overall, the song speaks to the idea of escaping to a place that is just for the two of them, where there are no distractions and where they can be together.

What a voice!  Nobody today can touch her.  She sings without all the goop today's singers add

My husband who just passed away took me to that hotel in Stockton NJ for our first date. We had dinner and he showed me the wishing well, told me the story behind the song. Two days before he died the Music Channel played an instrumental version of it and he tried to sing along with me remembering our time together and now facing the end of our Life together. <3

Ella revealed that there were two main singers that influenced her during the thirties: Connee Boswell & Dolly Dawn. She was a big fan of Helen Forrest's singing.
