1) John Towner Williams (born February 8, 1932) is an American composer, conductor, and pianist. With a career spanning over six decades, he has composed some of the most popular, recognizable, and critically acclaimed film scores in cinematic history, including those of the Star Wars series, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the Indiana Jones series, the first two Home Alone films, Hook, the first two Jurassic Park films, Schindler's List, and the first three Harry Potter films. He has a very distinct sound that mixes romanticism, impressionism and atonal music with complex orchestration. The classical music critic Marcus Paus argues that Williams' "satisfying way of embodying complex dissonances and avant-garde techniques within a larger tonal framework" makes him "one of the great composers of any century".

Williams married Barbara Ruick, an American actress and singer, in 1956. Together they had three children: Jennifer (b. 1956), Mark Towner Williams (b. 1958), and Joseph (b. 1960), who is the lead singer of Toto. The two remained married until her death in 1974. In 1980, Williams married Samantha Winslow, a photographer.

At the age of twelve he went to Italy to study under "The Maestro," Andrés Segovia. Later, he attended the Royal College of Music in London, studying piano because the school did not have a guitar department at the time. Upon graduation, he was offered the opportunity to create such a department. He seized the opportunity and ran it for the first two years. Williams has maintained links with the College (and with the Northern College in Manchester) ever since.
Williams is best known as a classical guitarist, but has explored many different musical traditions. He has collaborated with Julian Bream and Paco Peña and was a member of the fusion group Sky. He is also a composer and arranger.
Williams has commissioned guitar concertos from composers such as Stephen Dodgson, André Previn, Patrick Gowers, Richard Harvey, and Steve Gray. He has also worked with composers from his native Australia, including Phillip Houghton, Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards (composer), and Nigel Westlake, to produce guitar works that capture the spirit of his homeland.
He enjoyed a worldwide hit single with his recording of Cavatina by Stanley Myers, used as the theme tune to the Oscar-winning film The Deer Hunter (1979). The piece had originally been written for piano, for another film ten years earlier, The Walking Stick (1970) but re-written for guitar and expanded by Myers at Williams' invitation. In 1973, Cleo Laine wrote lyrics and recorded the song "He Was Beautiful" accompanied by John Williams. A year later, it was a top-five UK hit single for Iris Williams (no relation).
At the invitation of producer Martin Lewis he created a highly acclaimed classical-rock fusion duet with celebrated rock guitarist Pete Townshend of Townshend's anthemic "Won't Get Fooled Again" for the 1979 Amnesty International benefit show The Secret Policeman's Ball. The duet was featured on the resulting album and the film version of the show – bringing Williams to the broader attention of the rock audience.
The relationship with Lewis led to Williams' classical-rock fusion band Sky being invited to give the first-ever rock concert to be held at Westminster Abbey – a benefit concert for Amnesty that Lewis produced in February 1981.
He is visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

"Before showing a cut of the film to John Williams, Lucas and Hirsch added to the temp
track. The director had designed his film as a “silent movie,” told primarily through its
visuals and music, so great care was taken to obtain the right moods. “We used some
Stravinsky, the flip side of The Rite of Spring,” Hirsch remembers. “George said nobody
ever uses that side of the record, so we used it for Threepio walking around in the desert.
The Jawa music was from the same Stravinsky piece. We used music from Ivanhoe by
Rózsa for the main title. George was talking about having a majority of the film set to
music.”
“George had listened to a lot of records and done a lot of research, and people had given
him records,” Burtt says. “He had picked out some material from Dvo ˇ rák’s New World
Symphony for the end sequence of the great hall and the awards. He had chosen some of
Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony for Luke’s theme. We slowly built up temporary music tracks
and mixed them in with the film, so we had a temporary version of the film with an
essentially complete sound effects track and a patchwork music track that highlighted
various moments in the picture. At this point Johnny Williams was brought in.”

He didn't. You're completely missing the point, and you're probably not bright enough to get it.
You're so familiar with modern music that you hear the differences rather than the similarities Go listen to rock from the 50s or something, any genre you're less intimately familiar with, and listen to how alike the songs sound. They borrow everything from each other -- drum beats, chord progressions, guitar riffs, melodies, timbres, lyrical themes, so on and so forth. This is true of all music, across all time. This is true of all *art*.
Creativity is synthesis -- you feed stuff into your brain and it recombines it to produce something novel. Nothing ever comes from a vacuum. That's why there was no hip hop in 1920, and now that there's hip hip there are tens of thousands of songs using the same beat. You can pick any artist and comb through their influences to find everything they're recombining. That's not plagiarism, it's just how art works.

Still, describing his Music as "bouncing sounds and sound design or sound effect" I think comes from a place of ignorance. (not trying to be rude here)
There are a lot of information regarding Stravinsky compositing style and impact in music as you know today.
That fraction from the Rite of Spring was revolutionary in its time, new, fresh, original, no one ever did something like that with orchestra.
I know its a "pulse". but what makes it sound so eerie and original was the unexpected chords and melodies he used.
Regarding Williams, I love his music.
But he did exactly the same pulse on the same chords, at the same time signature.
is it ok?, of course is it.

My understanding is that Korngold and Williams actually worked together when Williams was starting out as a hollywood pianist. Lucas also specifically said he wanted the film to sound like an old Korngold score. So I see this as someone paying homage to a long lost mentor.

I think you can give John Williams a pass on the Home Alone Soundtrack. Even as a 4th grader I understood it as an homage the the nutcracker suite.

@vecernicek2 except for the fact that many 4th graders are in the nutcracker. My sister was in my city's production of the nutcracker every year from like first grade through high school, so she (and therefore me, because I got dragged along to ballet practice) was quite familiar with Tchaikovsky's work in 4th grade

Usually when filmmakers are cutting their movies they'll spot in temp music. What often happens is that the filmmakers fall victim to "temp love" whereby they've grown so accustomed to the temporary track they have a hard time parting with it. So the composers have to strike a balance between doing something original while at the same time making it easier for the director to let go of the temp track.

Yeah, I know about that. It seems like that happened to some degree, but John Williams seems to have that problem a lot. Maybe it is Steven Spielberg and George Lucas who are the problem.
