They weren't simpler days but they were more relaxed and the citizens weren't castrated by the flawed economic political decisions, so they had more to spend and weren't stressed as much over finances.
At least since the 80's but especially when introducing the Euro our government really never let the income rise as much as the inflation. So as a result we got less income for the same work (or more work as companies also were forced to skimp on employees). This while the products and services increased in cost with the inflation.
So the income didn't rise with inflation, but the products and services did. This means that at the end of the day people had less and eventually nothing extra to spend on things that make them relax or spend their live a little more socially. No, they now have to work 2 or 3 jobs and both partners in a household need to work to make ends meet.
So yeah, if you know someone who did the same work for 40+ years than ask them what they earned when they started out and what they earn now.
Now just grab that starting income figure and apply inflation correction than compare it to their current income (mind this doesn't even add the age and experience that would give you a higher income as we).
So yeah, I spoke to a waitress once. She came 11 USD per hour short on her current income compared to the inflation corrected income she had in 1989.
So 40 hours a week, that is 440 USD a week. That's, times 4 weeks for a month, roughly 1760 USD a month. If she worked the whole year long including holidays, than you'd be short 24.640 USD a year.
That is quite a bit of money that people ended up earning less in 40+ years time.
Yet still governments end up saying that the "purchasing power has increased". I call bullshit on that.
