My Funny Vallentine
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Behold the way our fine feathered friend,
His virtue doth parade
Thou knowest not, my dim-witted friend
The picture thou hast made
Thy vacant brow, and thy tousled hair
Conceal thy good intent
Thou noble upright truthful sincere,
And slightly dopey gent

You're my funny valentine,
Sweet comic valentine,
You make me smile with my heart.
Your looks are laughable, un-photographable,
Yet, you're my favorite work of art.

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smart?
But, don't change a hair for me.
Not if you care for me.
Stay little valentine, stay!
Each day is Valentine's Day

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smart?
But, don't change a hair for me.
Not if you care for me.

Stay little valentine, stay!
Each day is Valentine's Day

Overall Meaning

In "My Funny Valentine," Ella Fitzgerald sings about a person she loves, who may not necessarily fit into the typical societal definition of beauty or perfection. She describes this person as a "funny valentine," a "sweet comic valentine," who makes her smile with her heart. The person in question is not conventionally attractive, with looks that are "laughable" and "un-photographable." Despite this, the singer finds this person to be her "favorite work of art."

The lyrics of the song also delve into the importance of sincerity, truthfulness, and good intentions, instead of just physical appearance. The singer refers to her love interest as a "noble upright truthful sincere, and slightly dopey gent," suggesting that while the person may not be the epitome of perfection, they possess other virtues that make them valuable and lovable.

The song also touches upon the idea of romantic love being a continuous journey, where every day can be like Valentine's Day if the person remains true to who they are, and their love continues to flourish.

Overall, "My Funny Valentine" praises individuality and authenticity, shattering society's unrealistic beauty standards and praising inner beauty.

I was born on St. Valentine’s Day and like a little monkey, was covered in hair. My beloved mother called me her funny valentine, much to the dismay and disapproval of the nurses. Thank goodness, she held firm to her acceptance for the rest of her life. ❤ RIP dear mother of mine.

The judges said that to the woman on Britain's got talent. She sang this song, and Simon said, "you could sing the phone book."

@stellas6474

Nobody sings this beautiful song like Ella Fitzgerald.

Some little super talented girl comes close. Look for "Angelina Jordan My Funny Valentine".

@@danl.4743 I agree with you, Dan.
I always said that this jazz song was the most difficult one in Angelina's whole repertoire and that the fact that she was flawless in its delivery, taking into accont her young age at the time and its primitive recording, makes it her best overall accomplishment.
Still, Stella is right too, since Angelina herself never intended to sing it "like Ella Fitzgerald". Like for all her covers, she woud sing it her way and makes it her own, which is what any work of art should be, not a copy, but an original.

The best ever
