Moustaki was born Yussef Mustacchi on the 3rd May 1934 in Alexandria, Egypt, of Sephardic Jewish parents who had moved there from Corfu, and who ran a bookshop in the city. The family spoke Italian at home, but Georges (then Yussef) spoke Arabic with his friends and attended a French school to which his Francophile parents sent him and his sisters. In 1951 he moved to Paris, where he was inspired by the young Georges Brassens, in honour of whom he changed his name to Georges Moustaki.
Moustaki wrote and sang in French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, English, Yiddish, and Arabic. Early influences included Edith Piaf, with whom Moustaki carried on a year-long romance. His pan-national approach to music made him a star in Europe in the late sixties and early seventies.
He died on the 23rd May 2013 in Nice, France.

Petite sœur d'exil
Tu as les cicatrices
D'un 21 avril
Mais ne sois pas sévère
Pour ceux qui t'ont déçue
De n'avoir rien pu faire
A ceux qui ne croient plus
Voir s'accomplir leur idéal
Dis leur qu'un œillet rouge
A fleuri au Portugal
On crucifie l'Espagne
On torture au Chili
La guerre du Viêt-Nam
Continue dans l'oubli
Aux quatre coins du monde
Des frères ennemis
S'expliquent par les bombes
Par la fureur et le bruit
A ceux qui ne croient plus
Voir s'accomplir leur idéal
Dis leur qu'un œillet rouge
À fleuri au Portugal
Pour tous les camarades
Pourchassés dans les villes
Enfermés dans les stades
Déportés dans les îles
Oh muse ma compagne
Ne vois-tu rien venir
Je vois comme une flamme
Qui éclaire l'avenir
A ceux qui ne croient plus
Voir s'accomplir leur idéal
Dis leur qu'un œillet rouge
À fleuri au Portugal
Débouche une bouteille
Prends ton accordéon
Que de bouche à oreille
S'envole ta chanson
Car enfin le soleil
Réchauffe les pétales
De mille fleurs vermeilles
En avril au Portugal
Et cette fleur nouvelle
Qui fleurit au Portugal
C'est peut-être la fin
D'un empire colonial
Et cette fleur nouvelle
Qui fleurit au Portugal
C'est peut-être la fin
D'un empire colonial
In this song, Georges Moustaki praises Portugal for being able to stand up against its colonial oppressors and for pioneering the peaceful revolution that culminated in the Carnation Revolution in 1974. The song starts with Moustaki addressing his “muse,” calling her his “exile sister” and lamenting her wounds from April 21st, a tragic day in the history of the country. He then asks her to not be hard on those who have let her down, to understand that they were powerless to help her or to understand her pain.
The chorus is a defiant message of hope, calling on those who have given up on seeing their ideals happen to remember that a red carnation flowered in Portugal, symbolizing the end of colonialism and the overthrow of dictatorships. The second verse is a critique of the violence and bloodshed that stains many parts of the world. Everywhere, there are warring factions bombing and fighting each other, and the result is the suffering of the innocent. In the third verse, he hopes that his muse can also see hope in the distance, a flame burning bright that heralds a better future.
The fourth verse becomes a call to action, Moustaki takes a bottle of wine and asks his muse to take up her accordion, and spread the word of the peaceful revolution that happened. The song ends with a powerful repeated message, that the red carnation flower represents perhaps the end of an empire, an allusion to Portugal’s colonial past and historical relationship with its former colonies.

so weset alls im grünen Wald;
und all die müden Blumen,
die haben müden Tod.
Es geht eine dunkle Wolke herein.
Es soll und muß geschieden sein.
Ade Feinslieb, dein Scheiden
