El Plebeyo
Pedro Infante Lyrics

The song "El Plebeyo" by Pedro Infante tells the story of Luis Enrique, a working-class man who is in love with a woman from a wealthy family, but is unable to be with her due to society's rigid class divide. The opening lines of the song describe the city at night, with its streets filled with people going about their business in a slow and measured way. The artificial light that illuminates the scene serves to create a somber and melancholic atmosphere, hiding the sadness and betrayal that lurks in the shadows.
Luis Enrique is introduced as a man who works hard all day and returns to his humble home at night. Despite his status as a plebeian, he is a man who knows how to love, and he suffers under the inflexible laws of society that forbid him from pursuing a relationship with an aristocrat. He is a man of strong emotions who sings about the purity of human love, comparing it to the divine love of God. He questions the social construct of class inequality, asking why human beings are not all considered equal.
