The most iconic song to many French people, and possibly the song that put him on the map, was the huge 70's French hit "Laisse Béton" (the story - told with a great deal of humour - of someone who enters a bar and gets mugged for everything he owns, from his leather jacket, to his jeans, his boots, and ends up in an alley without any clothes on).
Renaud 'came back' in 2002 with a huge hit 'Manhattan-Kaboul' (featuring Belgian singer Axelle Red), comparing the lives of a Puerto Rican in NYC to an Afghan girl in Kabul in 2001. This song catapulted his latest album to the top of the charts and earned him various awards in France. His latest album was published in october 2006 and was called "Rouge sang".

So long, adieu mon rêve Américain
The lyrics of Renaud & Axelle Red's song Manhattan Kaboul talk about the stark contrast of two people, a Puerto Rican man and an Afghan girl, who live in completely different worlds. The Puerto Rican man is living in New York City, integrated into its fast-paced lifestyle, surrounded by towering skyscrapers made of glass and steel. He leads a life of materialistic pleasures, doing his job, snorting cocaine, and drinking coffee. On the other hand, the Afghan girl is living in abject poverty, a world away from Manhattan, in a war-torn country where destruction and misery are the norm.
Despite their differences, the two strangers are brought together on the altar of eternal violence. The 9/11 terrorist attack shatters the Puerto Rican man's life as his building is hit by a plane, and the Afghan girl's life is already shattered due to the never-ending war in her country. The song captures their pain, suffering, and disillusionment, highlighting the futility of war, the impact of terrorism, and the loss of human life.
The song also touches on imperialism, religion, and politics. It questions the West's perception of Islam and its imposition, and highlights how war has always resulted in the exploitation of human life. It's a powerful, thought-provoking song that reminds us of the human cost of war and terrorism.
