NozomiChild I can relate! For a great many years, all I wanted from men was friendship. I would kindly and carefully explain this to guys that were interested in me. Many of them would say, "sure, no problem", but it became way too clear they didn't mean it. I had to cut off some relationships entirely because they kept wanting what I couldn't give them. Yes, it hurts, it was painful for both of us. (I still miss some of them.) But I found it hurt them more if I let them hang around with the forlorn hope I'd change my mind. It's better to just rip that bandaid off!

A few men chose to walk away themselves because they weren't interested in "just" friendship--that hurt, too, but I understood.

Despite all that, most of my closest friends have been men. There are men that are capable of seeing women as people (rather than objects of lust or romance). They can be friends with women without expectations of "more". My friends love having a woman they can confide in and can be themselves around. (Guys don't usually talk about their feelings with other guys, and feel the need to impress the women they are interested in.)

That said, I just got married to my best friend. But in the beginning, neither of us were looking for anything other than friendship, neither of us wanted to get into a relationship with anyone. We gradually developed a great, close friendship with no ulterior motives on either side. It took us both by surprise when each realized we'd fallen for the other! I still tease him, "I had you firmly in the friendzone, how the heck did you sneak out?" <ggg> Our relatioship is all the better for having started out as friendship.

All I can say to you is stick to your guns, stay strong, and don't let another's feelings deflect you from what you really want. It can be very painful to hurt others (I'd rather be a dumpee than dumper), but it'd be unfair to both of you to do otherwise. There are guys you can be friends with, don't give up hope! But, unfortunately, you've got to accept that there are many you can't be friends with no matter how much you want to, & you've got to let them go. These tend to make their desires real clear real soon--be alert for the red flags. You'll know when--and if--you are ready for a romantic relationship. (I might also suggest you stay away from becoming "friends with benefits", that will confuse them and give them false hope--a hurtful thing to do.) Hope this helps at least a little!

@Ricky Ticky I only speak for myself, but I can only be friends with men I am not attracted to. If I am attracted to a man, I want to be in a romantic relationship with that man. A guy friend is like a brother, there is no attraction, I would never get remotely physical with any guy friend of mine because I see them as brothers. The problem is that when I like a man, I instinctively want to treat him differently, so I can't really be his friend, even if I try, it's too hard, I feel pain, anxiety, and what kind of friendship is that?

I can't be friends with a guy I like, because I will always be hoping for something and trying to read too much into things even if I know the guy is not into me. I actually met a guy who was very flirty with me at first and I truly liked him from the beginning and then he said he only wanted to be friends. I tried being friends with him because I do like him as a person and think he is cool, but I just can't, it stresses me out, and the worst part, I don't have eyes for anyone else because I like him. I am wired for monogamy.

I had to be upfront and just tell him that I couldn't be his friend anymore until I completely got over him, and that I want to give myself a fair chance to meet and feel interest in other men. He said he hopes we continue talking again sooner rather than later and that he really wants us to be friends... if someone else had said that, it would have been a nice compliment, but from him, it's painful.

So, for my own well-being I don't want to be just friends with people I feel attracted to. Once I am over him, then maybe we will be friends, but maybe not, it won't matter that much then since I do have enough friends.

He left he company then two weeks later he changed his WhatsApp profile photo into a woman saying that happy birthday sweetie. I was on the way to send him present then I saw that picture my heart was broken and my hand was shaking . Feel pain. I sent him messages he immediately said that I am a friend for him . After 10 days I didn’t sent him messages and then he sent me messages to ask it seems like I don’t want to talk with him anymore. What the fuck! I feel so painful and panic and crying. I deleted his phone number in case I wanted to contact him when I miss him. I also can’t be a friend with him .

If a guy just wants to be friends and he told you that, then just believe it and move on. Don't waste an iota of energy trying to change his mind. Walking away and being cool about it has a better potential of creating attraction. If you ask him out and he says he doesn't see you that way and just be friends, in his presence simply laugh it off. You can go home and bawl your eyes out away from him. But never make him feel bad about rejecting you. Stay the same friend you were before your announcement. If this is too hard, slow down for a bit or break contact. Move on and show you have moved on by dating other people. Never give the impression you are waiting around for him. If he wants you let him do the work next time around, and if he doesn't, you're already on the path to finding someone who will like you. It's hard, I know, but it's totally doable.

Nina Hesani I am sorry to sound harsh. However, you are the one letting this man take your confidence. He has made his choice to start a family with someone. Be the bigger person and help him concentrate on that by letting him go. Do yourself a favour and find someone YOU can start a family with. This man is having his cake and eating it and you are enabling that. You need to break contact with him. It will be painful and you'll probably be miserable for a few months. But the sooner you start dealing with the pain, the sooner you get your life on track. When next you see him, ask him if what you both have now will benefit either of you if you continue down this road over the next ten years. Ask him what plans does he have for the future for YOU. Ask him if he wants you to be the "other woman" in his life for ever. And then turn around and ask yourself the same questions. It's a no-brainer, my dear, think about your future. Even if you never meet anyone in future, being free and single is a much better choice that being someone's "dirty little secret", IMO.

I did it differently, my boyfriend had me in the friend zone for a few months. In the past he has had a lot of people hurt him, so I just said I would always be there for him, and after a while he asked me out. We have been going out for almost 8 months now. I love the friend zone. I have friends who are women, I have friends who are men. I was married for 32 years and now I'm a respectable Widow living an uncomplicated life. It took time to get used to living alone, fending for myself, learning how to ask for help when I need it and most difficult of all, finding an honest mechanic. The guy that friend zoned me never asked for advice about other women. He asked for a kiss twice, told me I was beautiful, asked but what if I fall in love with you then friend zoned me. We also slept in the same bed with one another and he didn’t try to have sex with me. I finally asked what it was he wanted and he said some how you got in the friend zone. Sure, the friend zone is super sucky when you're not there by your own choice, but regardless of how you got there it's the BEST place to gain understanding, empathy, and good interpersonal skills with the opposite sex. It's where people learn how to be better spouses, better friends, better co-workers, and someday, better parents. The friend zone is one of the most valuable places you can be, but few are willing to look past their own temporary disappointments to realize that. If you're smart, you'll put yourself in the friend zone with some of the opposite sex so you can learn from them.

I won't date a man who does't have women friends... in the same way I wouldn't date a man who refused to speak the same language as me except for pick-up lines. There's no chance of a meaningful relationship coming from such a pairing, and yet it's a fair analogy for what the vast majority of people are doing because they limit their opposite-sex interactions to dating.

I'm not trying to slam guys; men and women both frequently seem to think that they can make zero effort learning about the opposite sex simply as people and yet somehow everything will just fall into place once they're in a relationship. How do people think THAT'S a plan? It would be like me wanting a a particular job or career, but only studying how to go on interviews and not anything at all about the info and skills to do the job. Hell, the way many men and women deliberately demean each other's interests and concerns is even crazier... it's like wanting a job as an accountant because the pay is good, while hating math and refusing to learn it. So many relationships seem to be that way, too. Men and women not understanding and rejecting important things about each other, yet pursuing long-term commitments from each other. It's insane.

Most of my man's closest and most important friends are women, and most of my closest and most important friends are men. Our friend-zone relationships were where we learned all the skills we now enjoy together as a couple. It's INFINITELY better than the old "I want you but I don't understand you" paradigm.

Guys get so butthurt when you say you wanna be friends, not knowing that friendship is one of the best ways to know about someone. @Clare Jordin but how much effort are you going to put into the friendship and for how long? At some point, you'd want clarity, right? If things can progress to a relationship or not. The average friendship is less important compared to a relationship. I guess most people would have 5 close friends and about 30 less-closer friends, but only one partner. So, the stakes in terms of efforts are not the same between a friendship and a potential relationship.

thing about this is, for a girl, most of us don't really care what a guy looks or acts like, so long as he cares about us, with a guy a lot more in the looks department goes into it. yes all women want to be attractive, but part of that is a guy actually caring for us. we want to look good for them, and ourselves, no one else. then the thing we think of second is if this relationship is worth the investment.

A guy just did this to me. We met up several times and then he backed off a bit. We had a talk and he said he wasn't ready for a relationship at the moment but we should just get to know one another and go from there. I was ok with this as I didn't want a relationship either at the time, but he just got more and more distant with me. I am waiting for marriage also. There are different types of flirting. They don't all mean you're trying for sexual stuff before marriage. The trick is to be someone he knows has the capacity to be sexy within them somewhere, someone he knows is refraining from sex because of their principles, because they believe in marriage, and NOT be someone he thinks is simply emotionally incapable of it. i feel like you should have mentioned that often (specially for men) the friendzone means you´re not physically attractive to them. not like "slightly" unattractive but like way out of the zone they´d consider dateable. i can see why you didn´t mention this as it doesn´t exactly instill confidence to try ... but to be honest constantly trying to change stuff will be awkward and often times doesn´t do anything. why don´t you just go with "don´t be friends with them". there are lots of other fish in the sea and you don´t go though the emotional pain of being rejected over and over.

I know that I am attractive but i think my mistake was that i talked about my ex too much. No matter how hard I tried he ended up seeing me as a sister. Epic fail. It's okay though, I only wanted a confidence boost. Okay. Here's a different way of looking at things that I've had difficulty finding advice about online. Usually people are aiming to not be single, but I'm having the opposite problem. I'm trying to stay single, I REALLY like my freedom and need my independence at this point in my life. I remember dating this guy and our families were VERY close. He reached out to me, we exchange pictures, FaceTime so there was not Cat Fishing going on. We both lived in different states. He talked about me moving where he was, he gave me money, even hired me for his business. Well, when I kinda noticed a change in him, I resigned. He was a very busy man but always made some time for me but it started declining. He did a disappearing act. I think it would be interesting if you examined NOT two people in a possible relationship and the guy (or girl) says they would just rather be friends, but INSTEAD If a guy decides it would be nice to have a particular woman as a friend - no romantic relationship, just two people who get along doing stuff together - NOT SEX - but activities like movies, talking, dinner/lunch, etc, etc. I tried this with two women and both of them acted like total asses, actually flipped out. I used to believe what you said and wonder why people said otherwise. However, now whenever someone says stuff like you, I always think about actors. How they play different roles and we believe them (if they are good at acting ofcourse). They can be charming, geeky, nerdy and we all buy that. They don't go have a plastic surgery for every different role. They just make us see a different type of them, a person with same biological body but completely different soul. So I believe changing personality (completely and for good) can go a long way. My face didn't literally change since my teenage was over but managed to somehow attract two old crushes (not intentionally), when we met after a long time. A lot had changed inside, the way I hold myself now, attitude, jokes, body language. So it is possible.

She's only going to think you're an a** on top of it, and not want anything to do with you. When a woman tells you she just wants to be friends, she means exactly that, and nothing more. If u keep talking to someone about some things, not in an insisting way, but very regularly and naturally, he starts to associate u to that subject. It's been a year and a half since my husband died and there's always been some sexual tension between us so I thought with enough time, he might ask me out. But he keeps telling me about the other women he's dating. So, friendzone. I waited for some time. Just like it says in your book, I was the woman waiting for him to see me as something more. I finally told him that I could no longer accept friendship on his terms because I had feelings for him that he didn't return and I found that painful. His initial reaction was anger which was surprising because I don't think I've ever seen him angry. He told me that he couldn't get involved with me because I was the widow of his best friend but I'm not sure I believe that reason. After a couple of rough days he finally agreed to end our friendship. Of course the situation wasn't working and something needed to change. So if he's really interested in me then he'll come find me. And if he isn't then there's room for another man in my life now that I'm not constantly infatuated with him. My initial thoughts were that he might see me as high value because I stated my needs and he might perceive me as more of a challenge because I'm not making myself available. I just wanted to know what your thoughts were. Did I do the right thing?

Where you screwed up is let him know u like him. You should have waited for him to make even subtle move, then rejecting him a few times. Or even if he didnt make a move, imply that he did anyways: I saw the way you we're looking at me and you and I would never work. Make him think you're the one rejecting, because men are ego driven. They don't need honesty at all. They need to be playfully rejected and that always seems to work. Now this guy thinks you're pining after him he's turned off. So I would come to him and say something along the lines of, you were grief stricken and on medications that made you act out of character. Tell him you stopped the meds and horrified by the idea - it was a terrible mistake can he forgive u? And then proceed to date others. I think you can save a face.

Matthew, I have the opposite situation. I'm still married (will find out if the law place will help with my divorce from a guy who is in jail right now) next week, but the new guy in my life who is a Christian, keeps saying we are "just friends" even though he also said we will one day date, get engaged and marry. He doesn't push me away when I want to cuddle, but refuses to kiss me bc "you're still married." It's the saddest situation I have been in in years! Should I just back way off and sit on a chair across the room from him? Do I act like only a friend? Do I keep cuddling with him but avoid trying to kiss him (which he says he finds yucky and gross anyway?) He's in his 30's and I am almost in my 50's. Advice appreciated and maybe someone else can relate to this odd dilemma.

Agreed 100%.. Plus it's stupid because there's so many other men that are probably within a closer proximity and more accessible than him that I could be sex buddies with. I don't need to restrict myself to just him if I want just a "friend". So many men say they want to be just your friend, but then are the first ones to call a female a derogatory name if she's intimate with another guy. Always double standards. It's complete BS. You shot him down. He might never ask you out again. Girls/women need to realize it takes A LOT for some guys to ask a girl out. The same happened to me decades ago in HS. Years later, at the reunion she came alone and friends told me she kept staring at me. I ignored her. She was interested when I filled out because I was thin and a nobody then. I thought she was pretty and wanted to get to know her. She was far from a cheerleaders' body. She thought she was an A lister.The guys weren't swarming after her then. Many women really act like cats. The best way for a man to get one is to ignore them. They can't stand it because women largely want to be pursued. If any woman turned me down that's it for her.She was a real B to me and I gave her no cause to be.

Sorry for your story, and I suspect it is that way with most men, but my guy is still a good friend to me and we hang out. I've heard lots of stories where the girl first rejects the guy but they stay friends and end up together after all. Sometimes a girl just needs time (and patience from the guy) to realize she's already got a good thing. :)

Preferably don't ask, that's just from my personal experience. because if you're already good enough friends and you like him, you already know quite a bit about him, most likely including what he is looking for in a girl. So instead of making it an open discussion, gradually make the changes to fit into what he'd like. of course do it ONLY if it does not deviate drastically from the person you are/improves you as a person, and all that, which I'm sure you're smart enough to know on your own.

It's interesting how you can reverse his advice in order to BE in the friendzone when you're not attracted to a guy, but would love to be just friends.. (if you apply his advice on meeting a lot of guys, THIS will be necessary). Of course if you see the guy starts to like you, you'll wanna pull away so you don't mislead him and hurt his feelings

I am so tired of people using the "friendzone term" as a negative thing. If someone is offended to be your friend, they sure as hell don't serve more. If someone can't accept that you are not attracted to them and take it with dignity, that is a sign of character weakness to me. We should be happy, if the person we admire wants to be our friend, not offended! Who do we think we are, that everyone needs to be attracted to us? Mutual affection is precious and rare, so appreciate it when you have it, and accept when you don't. I think it is unfair to make demands on other peoples feelings. Love means wishing for someone else's happiness, regardless of who or what makes them happy. Love is unselfish. Being offended that someone isn't sexually into us, is self-centered and childish and means we have completely failed to see and understand the other person. That has nothing to do with love at all.

I see what you are saying. However the problem is deciphering the real intentions of a person. When a man friend zones a woman it can mean several things. Many men friend zone a woman with ulterior motives. Some men want a ego stroke. Some want to explore options while keeping the woman in audition mode. Some want women to chase them. Some want a nice way to end a relationship without looking like a bad guy. And the list could go on and on. The problem is when there are mixed signals involved or when a person says they want to be friends but they are not exhibiting what i would call friendship behaviour. The issue particularly confusing if one person is looking for a spouse. There are too many games being played now and too much dishonesty. If you dont want to be with a person then have the decency to leave that person alone. Friendship can only happen when both persons want the same thing.

Im not sure I agree that is is your behavior that makes a guy see you as a friend. You can have one guy see you as a friend, and another guy be turned on by you, and you have changed nothing. You've been the same all the time. I suspect attraction has alot more to do with something that is not a choice, something predetermined in the brain, that leads people either to you or to someone else.

The last thing I want to do is "get out of the friendzone"...if someone has to be convinced or shown I am worth dating, forget it. His genetics and wiring are telling him I am not what he wants. I cant put on a dog and pony show to become that.

As long as “friends” doesn’t mean sex buddy. As soon as sex enters the picture, all bets are off. Ive seen so many men in relationships with women from Hell because of sex, and they were “just friends”. Some of these guys will leave their wife and kids for that “friend”. No guyshould ever say those words. There are ways to convey their intentions and they need to work on their gentleman skills.

sounds like he is keeping you around as an 'option' if he can't find someone else. You deserve better and he is making excuses to keep you hanging in there. Remember the most desirable things in life are the ones worth working for, if he isn't working to "fix things" for you, then he doesn't value you like he should.
