Son nato in Mediterraneo
Son nato in Mediterraneo
Son nato in Mediterraneo

The song "Mediterraneo" is an ode to the Mediterranean Sea, where the singer and songwriter, Gino Paoli, and Ornella Vanoni grew up. The lyrics are a nostalgic reflection on their childhood memories and experiences of growing up close to the sea. The song begins by describing the singer's birthplace on the shore of the Mediterranean and his upbringing on the beach. He recalls his first love, which still sleeps in the shadow of a rock, and how he left behind his dreams and games hidden in the sand.
The song paints a picture of the sea's beauty, adventure, and unpredictability. The Mediterranean is depicted as a place of wonder and enchantment, full of treasures and challenges. Its red and fiery sunsets are something that the eyes of a child, who once ran on the beach, are accustomed to. The singer admits to being a liar and a gambler who loves wine, but he is also a man born by the sea, which he cannot change.
The song's final stanza is a contemplation on the sea's power to connect past and present. The singer wonders what will happen to his legacy when he is gone and when the lady (personified as the sea) will come to take him away. He assures his loved ones, who will throw his boat into the sea in an autumnal Levantine wind, not to cry because he will continue to live between his land and an olive tree. He envisions himself as salt and the colors of a sail and a broom close to the sea, where he was born.
