Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

... e ancora canto
Mia Martini Lyrics

Io contro il tempo
Son qui
E ancora canto per chi?
Canto per chi?
Chi mi ha tradita e poi ripresa
Chi mi ha lasciata troppe volte
Ho il pianto nel cuore, ma resto qui
Testarda me
E canto per te
Malinconia
Ti canto rabbia, pazzia, ah-uh-ah
Ancora mi invento per me
Io canto per me
Potessi rifare il mio cammino fino a qui
L'amore che ho dato, eh, riprenderei
Uh-uh-uh-uh, a te che ora sei così lontano io lo darei
Ragazzo mio, uh
Bambino mio, ah
Oh-oh sì, per te canterei
E sarei là dove tu sei
La tua chitarra, la tua voce sarei
Dolce il mio canto per te
Solo per te
E invece sono ancora qui, qui
Senza allegria, oh
Io contro il tempo
Contro di me, eh
E ancora canto, ma non so
Non so perché
Uh, na-na-na-eh
Qui, qui
No-no-no-no-no-eh
No-no-eh, no-no-no
Uh
No-no-no-no-no-eh
No-no
Qui
In "e ancora canto," Mia Martini sings about her ongoing struggle with time and her unwavering dedication to singing and expressing herself through music. The lyrics showcase a mix of emotions, ranging from betrayal and hurt to resilience and a fervent longing for love and connection.
She starts by questioning for whom she continues to sing, acknowledging that she sings for those who have betrayed her, taken her for granted, or hurt her. Despite the pain she carries in her heart, she remains stubborn and persistent, continuing to sing for herself and for the person she loves.
Martini expresses her longing and nostalgia for a lost love, wishing she could go back and redo her journey, reclaim the love she gave freely. She declares that she would give it all to the person who is now distant from her. She refers to this person as her "ragazzo mio" (my boy) and "bambino mio" (my child), emphasizing the deep connection and affection she feels for them. Her desire to be with them is expressed through the metaphor of becoming their guitar and voice, singing sweetly and exclusively for them.
Despite her melancholy and the absence of joy in her life, she persists against the challenges of time and fights against herself. She confesses that she still sings, but she doesn't know why she continues to do so. The repetition of "qui" (here) throughout the song highlights her presence and persistence in the face of adversity.
Overall, "e ancora canto" portrays Mia Martini as a passionate and resilient artist, who, despite facing hardships, finds solace and purpose in her music, singing for herself and for those she loves.
