Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

These lyrics are from Mia Martini’s song “E Stelle Stan Piovendo” which translates to “And Stars Are Falling”. The song tells the story of a person whose body is no longer responsive as they have reached the peak of their life and it’s time to leave this world. The singer is probably addressing someone they love, thanking them for being with them in the final moments of their life.
The first stanza sets the tone for the whole song, the world is burning and the body is too weak to respond to anything. The imagery is of the sky being like a burning silk that is slipping out of the hands of the singer, this is a metaphor for the fleetingness of life. The second stanza talks about the struggles of life, like ships sinking and nets getting lost at sea, the singer acknowledges that they too have had their share of hard times. But, the person they address has been the only one to have blown life into them, giving them strength and warmth.
In the third stanza, the body is compared to a wooden object that has been consumed, and the ashes that fly away represent the end of life. The last stanza repeats the opening stanza, but with the added message that life belongs to the one living it, and the sky is singing this message as a wise entity.
