Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Find the corner, the rockin' hard
Fire poofers crowded me
In the darkness but I can see
No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
Do du wa da da do du da
Da du ma day do day dam
Do du wa da da do du da
Do du wa da ha ha ha ha
In silence office, my own
Quiet homers were rockin' far
Grab in for me, quit is aaa-I
Look at up, fallin'
Am I fallin' from the guy?
No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to walk with me
Do du wa da da do du da
Da du ma day do day dam
Do du wa da da do du da
Do du wa daa
Took some bills and bar Billy boy
Talk about the things I've said
Hey guys, some got the faith
Oh, for God's believer
They talkin' at each other's name
Oh, let us pray, the sky is falling
The preacher where she must be right
Oh, you know on a colorful
And I am looking from the eye 'cause
It's the new Maloney-kish had taken over
She's the new splandy bae-ish who come to call
She's the new Mother Nature she'd taken over
I said over
She's gettin' us over
JSM know when you come back closer
No, she tweak it like a lose offender
Oh, let us go, the sky is fallin'
The Lord had really knew the end
Oh, you know how the storm beneath us
Has calling up from beyond
Seek of which must be rhyme my prayer
Oh Lord I'm from behind 'cause
It's the new Maloney-kish had taken over
She's the new splandy bae-ish who come to call
She's the new Mother Nature she's taken over
She's taken us over
She's taken us over
No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to walk with me
Do du wa da da do du da
Da du ma day do day dam
Do du wa da da do du da
Do du wa da ha ha ha
The lyrics of Mia Martini's "No Sugar Tonight" depict a feeling of loneliness and isolation. The opening lines describe a sense of being on one's own, with phrases like "lonely healing" and "find the corner, the rockin' hard." The mention of "fire poofers crowded me" and "darkness but I can see" suggests that the singer is surrounded by people or distractions, yet still feels empty and disconnected.
The repeated refrain of "No sugar tonight in my coffee, no sugar tonight in my tea" serves as a metaphor for the absence of sweetness or comfort in the singer's life. The lack of sugar represents a lack of companionship and support, as there is "no sugar to stand beside me, no sugar to walk with me." These lines reflect a desire for someone to share life's ups and downs with, to provide emotional nourishment and companionship.
The second verse delves deeper into the singer's inner thoughts and struggles. The lines "Grab in for me, quit is aaa-I, look at up, fallin'" convey a sense of seeking help or support, but feeling as if they are falling or failing. There is a sense of questioning and doubt, with the line "Am I fallin' from the guy?" hinting at a possible loss of faith or trust in someone.
As the song progresses, it takes on a more metaphorical and abstract tone. References to "the new Maloney-kish" and "the new splandy bae-ish" suggest the emergence of new, dominant forces or influences in the singer's life. The mention of "Mother Nature" taking over could symbolize a natural force or change that is altering the singer's circumstances.
Overall, "No Sugar Tonight" conveys a sense of longing, isolation, and a yearning for connection and companionship. The absence of sweetness in the singer's life is depicted as a metaphor for the lack of emotional support and solidarity.
