Adamo is one of the most commercially successful singers in Europe. Adamo has sold over 80 million copies of his albums worldwide. He is currently living in Belgium though he has lived in France with his family. His hits include "Tombe la Neige", "Vous permettez, Monsieur?" and "Inch'Allah", all from the sixties.
Adamo's early influences were the poetry of Victor Hugo, the music of French crooners such as Jacques Prévert or Georges Brassens, and the Italian canzonette. He started singing and composing his own songs from an early age. His debut was in a Radio Luxembourg competition, where he participated as singer and composer of the song "Si j'osais" ("If I dared") winning the competition's final held in Paris, in 14 February 1960.
Adamo's first hit was "Sans toi, ma mie", in 1963, from his debut album 63/64. He followed this with a series of hits, "Tombe la neige" ("The snow falls"), "Vous permettez, Monsieur?" ("May I, Sir"), "La Nuit" ("The Night") (1964), "Dolce Paola" ("Sweet Paola"), "Les Filles du bord de mer" ("The girls at the beach"), "Mes mains sur tes hanches" ("My hands on your hips") (1965), "Ton Nom" ("Your Name"), "Une meche de cheveux" ("Lock of golden hair") (1966), "Une larme aux nuages" ("A tear to the clouds"), "Inch'Allah" (1967), "L'amour te ressemble" ("Love resembles you"), "F... comme femme" ("F... like woman") (1968), "A demain sur la lune" ("See you tomorrow on the moon"), "Petit bonheur" ("Small happiness") (1969), "Va mon bateau" ("My boat goes"), "Les belles dames" ("Beautiful ladies") (1970), "J'avais oublié que les roses sont roses" ("I had forgotten that the roses are pink") (1971), "C'est ma vie" ("It's my life") (1975). Other notable songs included "Manuel", "Si Tu Etais", "Les Collines De Rabiah", "J'Te Lache Plus", "Mourir Dans Tes Bras", and "Ce George(s)".
The self-penned "Petit bonheur" sold over one million copies by April 1970, and was awarded a gold disc.
Amália Rodrigues recorded "Inch'Allah" in French. Adamo briefly attempted movie acting when he was cast in the film Les Arnaud (1967), which starred Bourvil.
He has recorded in many languages and, besides France and Belgium, had hits in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Turkey and also in Japan, where he toured repeatedly. Adamo has had hits and toured also in Latin America. In Chile, the audience awarded him an appreciation prize known as the "Antorcha" (Gold and Silver Torch) at the "Festival de Viña del Mar" held yearly in the "Quinta Vergara", at the seaside resort of Viña del Mar, where he once had to sing in three different, sold-out venues in the same night.
In the 1980s, Adamo's career faltered, as the style of his music was no longer fashionable. Since the 1990s, however, and on the crest of a nostalgia wave, Adamo has successfully resumed composing, issuing records and touring, starting with a full season at the Casino de Paris venue in April 1990. Adamo has sold over 100 million copies of recordings worldwide.

Canterò
Salvatore Adamo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In Salvatore Adamo's song "Cantero," the artist sings about those who are alone, constantly on the move, and dressed in unremarkable grey attire. Those who sleep in train stations, use a cardboard box for a pillow, and feel lost when spoken to in a foreign language. The singer empathizes with those who suffer the pain of separation, the challenge of raising a child alone, and the longing for the past. But with each of these individual stories, Adamo offers a simple solution: singing. Through the act of singing he believes that those who feel isolated will be immediately understood, and perhaps, that will lead to a feeling of loneliness quelled.
"Cantero" is an uplifting song that highlights the power of music as a unifying force. Adamo’s portrayal of loneliness and longing bridges many cultures and generations. It acknowledges that even in moments of solitude, we are never truly alone if we can express ourselves through the universal language of music. The song strikes a resounding chord in today’s society when the concept of isolation has become even more prevalent.

Per chi vive da solo ogni giorno
For those who live alone every day
For those who travel and never stay still
Per chi veste di grigio lontano
For those who dress in gray from afar
But in their eyes, there's a field of wheat
Per chi dorme in una stazione
For those who sleep in a station
Una valigia e un cuscino di cartone
A suitcase and a cardboard pillow
Per chi sente una lingua straniera
For those who hear a foreign language
E si sveglia già oltre frontiera
And wakes up already beyond the border
Canterò canterò
I will sing, I will sing
E se mi sente capirà al volo
And if they hear me, they will understand immediately
E chissà sarà un po' meno solo
And who knows, they might be a little less lonely
Canterò canterò
I will sing, I will sing

Per chi scrive una lettera al giorno
For those who write a letter every day
Con le mani ghiacciate d'inverno
With winter-chilled hands
Una lacrima bagna un ti amo
A tear wets an 'I love you'
E una rosa li punge la mano
And a rose pricks their hand
For those who think of a child every night
Che a lasciato in un verde giardino
They left in a green garden
Per chi guarda una fotografia
For those who look at a photograph
E li prende la malinconia
And it fills them with melancholy
Per chi aspetta che sia primavera
For those who wait for spring
Per tornare alla vita com'era
To return to life as it was
For you, when I see you two meters away
Impazzisco d'amore ci credi
I go crazy with love, do you believe it?

I SHALL SING
To whoever lives alone every day
To whoever must travel and travel
To whoever must wear grey, far away
But carries a wheatfield in his eyes
To whoever sleeps in a train station
A suitcase and a cardboard pillow
To whoever hears a foreign language
And wakes up across a border
I shall sing, I shall sing
If he hears me he will get the message
And feel less lonely, who knows
I shall sing, I shall sing
Even if breathless
The song for those who had to leave
To whoever writes a letter a day
With frozen hands in wintertime
A teardrop damping a love word
A rose stinging his hand
To whoever misses his child
Left behind in a green garden
To whoever falls into the blues
While facing an old snapshot
I shall sing, I shall sing
Even if breathless
The song for those who had to leave
To whoever is awaiting springtime
To resume the good old life
To you, making me fall deeper in love
When I see you two meters away
I shall sing, I shall sing
If he hears me he will get the message
And feel less lonely, who knows
I shall sing, I shall sing
Even if breathless
The song for those who had to leave
