Calle Melancolнa

De una yegua sombría
Por la ciudad camino
No preguntes adónde
Busco acaso un encuentro
Que me ilumine el día
Y no hallo más que puertas
Que niegan lo que esconden
Las chimeneas vierten
Su rollito de humo
A un cielo cada vez
Más lejano y más alto
Por las paredes grises
Se desparrama el zumo
De una fruta de sangre
Crecida en el asfalto
Ya el campo estará verde
Debe ser primavera
Cruza por mi mirada
Un tren interminable
El barrio donde habito
No es ninguna pradera
Desolado paisaje
De antenas y de cables
Vivo en el número siete
Calle Melancolía
Quiero mudarme haré años
Al barrio de la Alegría
Pero siempre que lo intento
Ha salido ya el tranvía
En la escalera me siento
A silbar mi melodía
Como quien viaja a bordo
De un barco enloquecido
Que viene de la noche
Y va a ninguna parte
Así mis pies descienden
La cuesta del olvido
Fatigados de tanto
Andar sin encontrarte
Luego, de vuelta a casa
Enciendo un cigarrillo
Ordeno mis papeles
Resuelvo un crucigrama
Me enfado con las sombras
Que pueblan los pasillos
Y me abrazo a la ausencia
Que dejas en mi cama
Trepo por tus recuerdos
Como una enredadera
Que no encuentra ventanas
Donde agarrarse, soy
Esa absurda epidemia
Que sufren las aceras
Si quieres encontrarme
Ya sabes dónde estoy
The lyrics of Joaquín Sabina y Viceversa's song Calle Melancolía are an expression of loneliness and longing for connection. The singer describes himself as a traveler riding a somber mare, going through the city streets in search of an encounter that may lighten up his day but only finds doors that deny what they hide. The smoke rising from the chimneys and the gray walls spreading the juice of a fruit grown in the asphalt serve as metaphors that describe the impersonality of the urban landscape.
The singer longs for a change of scenery as he lives in Melancholy Street but he has been trying to move to Joy Neighborhood for years, but every time he tries, the tram has already left, leaving him in his place of despair. He describes his home as a desolate landscape of antennas and cables, and his life as an endless journey on a crazed ship that goes nowhere, descending the slope of forgetfulness with tired feet.
The persona has become accustomed to his life of solitude, lighting up a cigarette, organizing his papers, and working on a crossword puzzle. He argues with the shadows that inhabit the corridors and embraces the absence that you leave in his bed. He is like a vine that climbs your memories but finds no window to hold on to, becoming the absurd epidemic that afflicts the sidewalks. The song's final lines are an invitation to find him where he is, on Melancholy Street.

Como quien viaja a lomos
Like someone traveling on the back
De una yegua sombría
Of a somber mare
Por la ciudad camino
Through the city I walk
No preguntes adónde
Don't ask where to
Busco acaso un encuentro
Perhaps I seek an encounter
Que me ilumine el día
To brighten up my day
Y no hallo más que puertas
And I find nothing but doors
Que niegan lo que esconden
That deny what they hide
Las chimeneas vierten
The chimneys pour out
Su rollito de humo
Their puff of smoke
A un cielo cada vez
To an increasingly distant
Más lejano y más alto
And higher sky
Por las paredes grises
Along the gray walls
Se desparrama el zumo
Spills the juice
De una fruta de sangre
Of a blood fruit
Crecida en el asfalto
Grown in the asphalt
Ya el campo estará verde
The countryside will already be green
Debe ser primavera
It must be spring
Cruza por mi mirada
Passes before my eyes
Un tren interminable
An endless train
El barrio donde habito
The neighborhood where I live
No es ninguna pradera
Is no meadow
Desolado paisaje
Desolate landscape
De antenas y de cables
Of antennas and cables

I live in number seven

Quiero mudarme haré años
I've wanted to move for years
Al barrio de la Alegría
To the neighborhood of Joy
Pero siempre que lo intento
But every time I try
Ha salido ya el tranvía
The tram has already left
En la escalera me siento
I sit on the stairs
A silbar mi melodía
Whistling my tune
Como quien viaja a bordo
Like someone aboard
De un barco enloquecido
Of a crazy boat
Que viene de la noche
That comes from the night
Y va a ninguna parte
And goes nowhere
Así mis pies descienden
So my feet descend
La cuesta del olvido
The slope of forgetfulness
Fatigados de tanto
Tired from so much
Andar sin encontrarte
Walking without finding you
Luego, de vuelta a casa
Then, back home
Enciendo un cigarrillo
I light a cigarette
Ordeno mis papeles
I sort my papers
Resuelvo un crucigrama
I solve a crossword puzzle
Me enfado con las sombras
I get angry with the shadows
Que pueblan los pasillos
That populate the hallways
Y me abrazo a la ausencia
And I embrace the absence
Que dejas en mi cama
That you leave in my bed
Trepo por tus recuerdos
I climb through your memories
Como una enredadera
Like a creeping vine
Que no encuentra ventanas
That can't find any windows
Donde agarrarse, soy
To cling to, I am
Esa absurda epidemia
That absurd epidemic
Que sufren las aceras
That the sidewalks suffer
Si quieres encontrarme
If you want to find me
Ya sabes dónde estoy
You already know where I am
