Crying in the Chapel
Sonny Til & The Orioles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You saw me crying in the chapel
The tears I shed were tears of joy
I know the meaning of contentment
I am happy with the Lord

Just a plain and simple chapel
Where all good people go to pray
I prayed the Lord that I'll grow stronger
As I live from day to day

I searched and I searched but I couldn't find
No way on earth to find peace of mind

Now I'm happy in the chapel
Where people are of one accord
Yes, we gather in the chapel
Just to sing and praise the Lord

You'll search and you'll search but you'll never find
No way on earth to find peace of mind

Take your troubles to the chapel
Get down on your knees and pray

Then your burdens will be lighter
And you'll surely find a way

Overall Meaning

The song "Crying in the Chapel" by Sonny Til & The Orioles is a gospel hymn that speaks about the beauty of finding solace and peace through prayer. The lyrics of the song evoke a sense of the singer having found redemption and purpose through their faith in God. The opening lines introduce the idea of crying in a chapel, but the tears are not of sorrow but of joy. The singer knows the feeling of contentment, and it is a direct result of their relationship with God. The chapel referred to in the song is a place that represents a haven for the devout and a place where people can come together in prayer.

The simple chapel referred to in the song is not grand or ostentatious but represents a place where regular people can come together to pray. The singer prays to the Lord to find strength to handle each day, and it is the simple act of praying that brings him closer to finding peace. The verses of the song emphasize the idea that searching for peace of mind on earth is futile, and it is only through prayer and faith that one can find true solace. The repetition of the refrain reinforces the idea that taking one's troubles to the chapel, and getting down on one's knees to pray can lighten the burden of life and provide a way to find peace.

I love this version because while others sing the same words, you can feel the Lord on this.

Amen!

@Keranu

Doowop singers back then had otherworldly vocals. I don't know how such talent has mostly been long forgotten.

@doreenachtymichuk7909

ok, i'm generations too young to truly appreciate this, but I am a classically trained musician, and I loved this piece. it wasn't rushed, the vocals were smooth and almost ... hushed. absolutely beautiful. like a lullaby .

@ntnrocket1

Does that mean you are also generations too young to appreciate Mozart??? Just wondering.
