He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.

Quand soudain gonflant mes poumons
J'ai crié au secours à moi au feu alerte
Dans mes bras tu n'as fait qu'un bond
Tu m'as dit sauve-moi on va mourir peut-être
The lyrics of Pierre Perret's song "La porte de ta douche est restée entrouverte" depict the singer peeking through a slightly open bathroom door while the person inside is taking a shower. The singer admires the person's body and indulges in a fantasy of traveling to different exotic locations and engaging in love with them. They describe the person's body as a "grapevine of gifts" and compare them to a flexible seaweed in a pearly sea. The lyrics also mention a documentary on flamingos and strawberries that ignites the singer's desire.
The song's lyrics can be interpreted as a voyeuristic and objectifying representation of desire, as the singer reduces the person inside the shower to their body and indulges in a fantasy without their involvement. The lyrics use exotic locations and cultural references as a backdrop for the singer's fantasy, possibly adding a layer of racial fetishization.
Overall, "La porte de ta douche est restée entrouverte" can be seen as an ambiguous mix of desire and objectification, with the narration of the lyrics causing discomfort to some listeners. It is important to critically engage with the way media depicts desire and avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
